There's usually less of a cue for the self-checkout and I get too nervous to talk to cashiers.

A lot of you are saying that you prefer to do the self-checkout because you're either nervous or anxious about talking to a cashier. Is it the norm where you live to have a conversation with the cashier when you're checking out or is it okay to just say hi and bye? Have any of you ever had a bad experience, maybe a conversation that went bad? I recall going to an auto parts store a few weeks back and dealing with a cashier that was rather odd. He was friendly, but he would yell fanatically and kept wanting to stretch out the conversation that we were having while I was just trying to buy some parts and get out of there quickly. I don't mind talking to people, but I also don't like having unneeded or boring or awkward conversations. Do some of you avoid cashiers because you're shy or because you want to avoid chatty cashiers?

If self-checkouts were easier to work I would choose them. I always end up having to get help from someone anyways (like something didn't bag properly or my card doesn't work). But yeah I hate chatty cashiers esp when they try and guess what I'm cooking from my groceries lol.

I prefer using a checkout line with a cashier. I've never actually used a self-checkout and have no intention to. I'm not a fan of replacing jobs humans can do to support themselves financially.

I also find it odd how many people in the thread said they get anxious and nervous about talking to the cashier. I'm quiet, asocial and prefer to keep to myself, but even I don't have an issue with talking to a cashier. The conversation is only ever credit or debit. If they're judging you for some reason, it's silent and in their own mind. And they probably aren't, because they help hundreds of people a shift and they most likely have no reason to bother remembering you.

self checkout. cashiers have a tendency to try and talk to me but i despise talking to people in public

yeah i get asked why im buying something and it really annoys me

normally both.. just depends how long or busy the place may be ^^
but it is convenient to have a self-check out if you're in a hurry or have very few items to purchase c:
then everyone can be happy! lol.

Well, you probably shouldn't buy rope, duct tape, and a bandana all together at once. I'd probably start asking questions, too. ;)

I prefer the cashier because the self checkout barely works and never accidentally gives me too much change.

self check out if they have an option for it.
i don't like talking to people, it gets awkward :v

i once have bought rope and duct tape together before but it was at b&q lmao the rope was for a art project when i was younger and the duct tape was because i needed to fix my textbook

but also i never talk to people unless theyre my friends/i have to so when randoms talk to me im like UM

I usually prefer self-checkout cause I find that the people who put my groceries in bags mess it all up and it annoys me, but if I have a cart filled with stuff, I just go to a cashier line because self-checkout would make the process super long.

Usually self, unless I'm buying something that can't go through self checkout or I have too many items, etc. After working 3 years at a retail giant, I know how tiring cashiering gets and I definitely preferred people to use self check out if it was available, if only to give me a short break.

I hate both.. I get so much anxiety going to the store. I would rather do all my shopping online. But, when it comes to groceries I get a month's worth of food at a time, so I have to go with the cashier.

Self-checkout always, unless it gets too packed cause there's a high school nearby the store I always go to and it's always filled with a bunch of people. Then I just go to the cashier because the lines are shorter
