Ok, so I opened my 3DS to save my town's progress so I can switch out the carts. I saved and shut down the game, took out the cart, swapped them, and did what I needed to do as I've done before. Prior to even accessing my swapped game, I updated my Mii Plaza and downloaded one of the free games; Simple stuff. The swapped game loaded up just fine and I did what was needed.

However, when I swapped back to my original cart, it would get to the loading screen (with the small train). It loaded like normal, froze just before I think the town was supposed to load, and then crashed giving me the following: "An error has occurred forcing the software to close. The System will now restart."

At first, I thought it was just dusty since it's been in my 3ds a while (I pretty much always have it in unless I swap it out), so I cleaned the contacts and tried again, still crashed.

Then I tested out a bunch of games (including the acnl cartridge I swapped in) and they all loaded fine. It's just this one acnl cart I've had since 2013 that's randomly decided to stop working for the first time ever.

Any idea as to why it's suddenly given up the ghost?

In addition, over the last couple of week this game has taken an unusually longer time to save sometimes. I didn't think much of it since it didn't crash then. This is the first time I've been unable to load after saving.

Sometimes it saves in a couple seconds, other times it took a good few minutes.

Oh I am so sorry. I do not know how to help and sadly I don't think there is much anyone could do to help in this situation - unless the problem resolved itself.

I will say that I have noticed a few people have cartridges from when the game first came out that after being played so much may have errors that cause corruption.

If the red screen border comes up, don't let it continue. Just shut down and close for now. Maybe someone knows what to do. :(

Hugs

Even trying to create a new town results in crashing. After getting the same results on all 3 of my 3Dses that confirms it: my cartridge is officially shot. I thought I'd seen the last of this with my GBA games, but no apparently my 3DS wants me to relive that horror. -_-

Something like this happened with the first NL cartridge I bought in 2013.It kept getting stuck on the red 3DS logo screen and my town wouldn't load.I saved my town info by buying a digital copy and transferring my save file from the cartridge to the digital copy.My game has played normally on the digital copy ever since.I've read that the motherboard on the cartridge can get corrupted rendering it unplayable but the game save is still intact. This might be what happened to your cartridge.

Yep, that's exactly what happened. I figured that whatever piece of programming that saves game data on that cart has officially died rendering it unplayable. Last time I experienced this was with a DK Country GBA game almost a decade ago. I never thought this stuff happened in today's age of cartridges, but now I know what to expect.

Since the cartridge is basically bricked, nothing to do but replace it.

So sorry to hear this happened :(, I had a problem with one of my cartridges where it would crash and tell me the cart had been removed from the system (it hadn't) a few months ago but the issue seems to have fixed itself. Scary while it was happening though.

If you need anything for your new town when you buy another copy let me know.

Yeah, same here- if you need anything, hit us up fam. Losing your town to the corruption void sucks major and I'm sorry that happened to you.

My advice to you about the save in the cart: It's probably salvageable if it's a cart problem. You can either buy a digital copy of the game and use Nintendo's own save manager to transfer the save to it. Or, if you want another cart or don't want to use nintendo's limited data manager: Get a way to boot into homebrew and their more thorough save manager, and look up a way to transfer the save correctly (It's super easy, it just needs a couple more steps than a normal save injection because of how New Leaf is coded.) If that doesnt work, then it's your save that's dead, though I doubt that is the case due to you saying it crashed on New Game too.

Good luck, and if you truly have to start over, let me know. I will shower bells and rare items on you like a heavy rainstorm fam

Too bad. Good luck on building another town.
Maybe you'll grow to like your new town as much or if not more than your other one.

I always get worked up reading these threads o__o I would freak out if my cartridge stopped working... I hope yours starts working again.
