Can't get to my mayor's seat in the town hall?

I just started my new file today, and I finished the plaza ceremony and paid off my house. But when I go into the town hall, the desk flap is closed and I can't get to the mayor's chair to start the town permit. Am I missing something here? I don't remember this happening before and I've restarted NL countless times... the gate is closed as well so it's not that, and I saved and quitted and it didn't help either.

Isn't there a thing where you have to talk to your villagers first? Introduce yourself to them?
I seem to remember that but I'm really not sure, sorry if it's no help.

As I recall, it's closed the first day. Tomorrow the desk flap is opened.
