I’ve used over 500 pieces of bait in the last few days trying to get the char. I’ve got a 3rd level cliff. I’ve caught many cherry salmon, which is also a cliff top fish, so I’m pretty sure that’s not the problem. A friend has been helping me with bait, so I haven’t had to make all of that. Any tips? I’m very frustrated.

The Char is my nemesis. First time around, it took me 200+ bait to catch the one I ended up donating. When they came back, I wanted to catch three more for a model, but after 200 more bait, I only caught one. That little jerk is currently swimming in a tiny 1x1x1 tank sitting high atop a Vintage wardrobe. That's what it gets for being such a jerk.

I just caught one on level two in the clifftop pond next to my house.

I just kept five bait on me, and reset until I got one.

Took about ten minutes.

Keep at it. :)

According to this speadsheet, the best time for you to try to catch it is 9am-4pm with a 2% chance of it spawning if you have a NH island. The rest of the time it's 1%. So yeah, it's a really rare fish.

I hope this doesn’t sound rude and I’m sorry if it does! But I think you mean 4pm-9am. Every other website lists the Char as showing up at those times.

But wow, only 1%?? That is really rare... No wonder I couldn’t catch it when I only spent 70 bait trying to get it..

Are you fishing in a river or pound? A Char can spawn on a 2nd level cliff if you want to switch things up.

According to the spreadsheet and Nookipedia, it's available all day in November. The best is 9am-4pm for 2% chance instead of a 1% chance.

I haven't been looking at guides for which fish are leaving, so I didn't know about char until this thread. I caught one after my 3rd piece of fish bait! It's currently snowing on my island, so maybe that made it easier.

I have had a lot of trouble finding rare fish on my new island. I haven't found a char yet. I keep getting cherry salmon. I figure that I'm going to be playing ACNH for 2 or 3 years so I have time to catch them and those annoying tree bugs. I got lucky with the stringfish on my other island though. Caught it on the 6th bait. Sometimes good luck happens.

I didn't have much trouble with this one at all, though admittedly I have fished a lot. 🤔

Also I raised part of my island and the river that ran there, which helped a lot when finding clifftop fish (it only has to be one level up to count). Really recommend that if you can get away with it, saves a lot of fish bait and frustration when you can just fish for the right size shadows when you see them 🤷🏻‍♂️
