Can you use the Wii u and Nintendo item without amiibo?

They only give you special abilities in Puzzle League, so without them you have the single horizontal wipe out ability which is definitely okay, I've never used any amiibo for PL and I've been able to progress just fine.
You do need amiibo to use your villagers in Desert Island Escape though, but I think you can also spend Play Coins to unlock them too.

For Puzzle League, you need Amiibo to unlock special abilities, but you don't need those abilities to do well in the game.
For Desert Island Escape, you can use your villagers for 2 Play Coins each for each game (so 6 total if you don't use any Amiibo), but you're limited to your villagers in your town which can be bad if they don't have good abilities in the game.

With the new features, it's worth at least getting some of the amiibo cards. It's fun having an animal in an RV every day, and it is a lot easier for me than spending Play Coins in Desert Island. If you are ever interested and don't have a New 3DS, though, you'll have to buy that hockey puck NFC reader. That's the biggest hurdle, since you'll be out $20.
I may be wrong, but I think if you go the Play Coins route in Desert Island, I think you can keep the three you spend coins on for as long as you like without having to spend any more coins. You will have to spend more if you want to change to your other animals, so just get out and walk a little bit.

You have to pay 6 Play Coins for every game if you don't use Amiibo, even if you use the same villagers.
