Yes, you can restart. After launching the game, hold A+B+X+Y simultaneously after the Nintendo 3DS logo disappears but before the title screen appears.

What was your huge mistake? You can change and re-design everything in the game, including your appearance, so I'm curious about what your mistake was. The only thing you can't change is your name.
