On that first day, get a hold of 500 bells (with fruit or shells sold at Re-Tail Shop). Then get your picture taken. That will get you access for using the train.
After this, even with that first day of five starters (which will not include one of the following: Cranky, Snooty, Lazy, Normal, Jock, Peppy), you can go into another town and get a villager to move into yours.
"Animal Crossing: New Leaf" starts you off with five villagers.
In my first town, Applewin, my first five starters were:
Walt (Cranky)
Jambette (Normal)
Velma (Snooty)
Scoot (Jock)
Twiggy (Normal)
The game didn't start me with a Lazy. It was the remainder of the six [original, possible starters of Villager Personalities].
"Animal Crossing: New Leaf" never gives you, among your first five starting villagers, a Smug or an Uchi. So, in hindsight, while I did get Drago as my original Lazy (he was slotted at No. 8 after No. 6 Keaton, a Smug, and No. 7 Shari, an Uchi), I could have taken advantage of this had I an extra 3DS game console and game copy?or had I been at this site in pursuit of a particular Lazy or Smug or Uchi.
