Can someone please explain TBT bells?

Okay, I've read the sticky about TBT exchanges and have looked at multiple other threads, but i still don't understand. Can someone give me a brief explanation? First, how are they earned? I seem to have quite a few but I have no clue how I got them nor what I could be doing with them.

You earn them from posting mostly, depends on quality of your post and the board. For example, I'm 100% Re-Tail doesn't award TBT bells but Animal Crossing New Leaf board does.
