Can some staff member seriously tell me

Anything that doesn't result in flaming. As far as I know, you're free to post anything (with reason of course) as long as it doesn't offend people's beliefs or cause a flame war.

But flame wars start randomly! D:

So, technically, if I wanted a thread locked, I could just start a flame war.

=D

What's amusing is that you're saying if people aren't talking politics or religion it can't be serious.

No hes not, hes saying that theres no reason religion or politics should be against the rules. If someone doesn't feel that he/she should discuss the topic then why not just stay out of it. Or is that person so radical about there opinions that they have to complain about every detail.

My point in this post is asking what else is serious? You keep mentioning that there are these things but fail to mention them.

Serious discussion don't start flame wars, ignorant statements do.

Technically, a serious discussion could be of anything, as long as the conversation stays on topic and is talked about in a serious matter. (no rude comments, spam, immature posts) So it would be kind of hard to pinpoint simply one topic and say that it could be serious when there are millions of different topics that can be serious. And yes, these serious topics could be about religion or politics, but there are certainly many more that could be discussed with the same amount of seriousness.

That's all my opinion, don't know about yours, feel free to criticize me.

That's actually much harder than it sounds, as I'm sure you already know.

:P

But I was thinking along the lines of news (not necessarily politics), Sports, Gaming, technology, astrology, careers, education... I don't know, those are some off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are many things that could lead to serious discussion rather than these.

Those things can be serious (I'm not basing this post on astrology) but most discussion about them aren't. Hell, this is a video game forum.

Sport fans are fueled by beer is what I'm trying to say. Within a certain franchise fans can talk to another well but outside, things can get hectic.

Yeah, Sports can get out of hand like you said, but I've had some serious conversations with people over the NHL and MLB a good few times, and the went very well. But that's my personal experience. Could vary from personal experience. And I dont know where astrology came from to tell you the truth

:P I was reading a book with it in it so I suppose that's why it came to mind.

What the problem is is that conflicting opinions is practically not allowed outside of video games here.

Serious discussion doesn't involve paragraphs of posts but of developed opinions discussing a subject. You can't stop someone from voicing their opinion. Eventually, members will grow up and want to talk about these things. TBT is heading down the path to alienating these people. With the lack of members coming in this is very dangerous.

You hit the nail on the head. That's exactly what I think as well, it's just that I'll argue the point that there are other topics besides those which are not allowed. But if these topics other then those not allowed by the rules are locked and shot down, we have nothing, which is what I think you're getting at. So what I think, is that you should be allowed to voice your opinion, whether it conflict another or not, as long as the discussion stays serious and there are no outright rude comments made to the other individual(s). In my opinion, I think polotics should be allowed, as long as the discussion remains serious. And I'm not too sure about religion, as it is a very touchy subject with people, but I'm sure serious discussions could be made about this as well. But as of now, it seems we won't be getting these.

you can talk about your day at school

provided you don't tell anyone your real name, picture, address, phone number, age, gender, location, etc. etc.
