I'm curious. I've been plot resetting to have Eugene two space to the left of my house and he hasn't come anywhere close. I noticed a clover is one space in ahead of where I'd want him to go. Are my chances of getting him there ruined because of that clover? Robin tried landing in that exact spot when I plot resetted for her when there was no clover present.
Also! When my boyfriend was plot resetting for Charlise, she never came close to the place he wanted her. We figured it was because he had furniture all over the spot where he wanted her. I can't find anything about this, so please help!

The clover won't deter a villager from setting a plot (I'm under the impression they're treated like flowers and trees), but items do?? (Kind of....)
A little while ago I saw a post on tumblr saying that if you placed bells periodically all over the map a villager will move into the space you left open.
To test it, I filled a whole section of my map (like every single space) with stuff from my closet that I didn't want and neither Winnie nor Sparro ever set a plot in that field. But in the areas where I placed bells (about 3 squares apart) Sparro kept moving in on top of them, it took me about 40 resets before I finally got him in the spot I wanted.

I don't know how helpful that is, but I thought I'd share. :y Good luck plot resetting for Eugene!

I wish I had known about this trick before I ended up going to the day he plots on. :(
Interesting find, though! I'll have to utilize items for plot resetting when I start my new town. Thanks for replying!

No problem! I don't know how well it would work if you filled your entire map with items, but I think it'd be a good method to save hybrid gardens and orchards.

No, I'm pretty sure that they can trample stuff like you. *coughcoughflowerscoughcough*
It could be the personality, or maybe just luck.

Pretty sure it's luck. When I was plotting Julian he always went into a spot that I can never get them to go into anymore and there's nothing there. They choose the most crowded/stupid spots now. -_-

Well, after placing down bells, furniture, clothing and things of the like I can confirm that they will still plot on top of all these things. In my experience, at least... Maybe I'm just horribly unlucky. I've never heard anything about personality types determining where they'd want to move. My other smug is to the right of me and, from what I read, it seems those of the same personality typically move close to each other? I would've thought, by that logic, Eugene would have no problem moving to the left of me. I also have read that they like to be near mayor houses, but not this animal! I'll probably just settle with him moving close to me rather than beside me. If anyone does discover some tip to controlling where they move by placing stuff down please let me know!

Ahh, that's unfortunate! Maybe I was just lucky???
How much of your map did you fill up? None of my villagers moved in to the big field I had completely filled with stuff, but when it came to the rest of the map everything was spaced out they were all over the place. The only thing I can think of is that the game chose the "less damaging" route if that makes sense? I think if you did small areas rather than one big one it might be more successful.

I've also heard of people building signs and light posts in certain spots to stop villagers from moving there.

I tried to spread it out. There's tons of furniture everywhere but nothing that is completely covered. I have done something with a PWP before to make sure no one moved into a spot where I wanted a specific villager. Maybe I'll give that a shot.

nah, they move on top of everything lol the only way to influence where they move somewhat is by using PWPs, if you have stuff on the ground (i.e. furniture) they'll just move on top of the items and then they'll show up in your lost and found later.
