Can my villagers access their backyard?

Hi guys,
I’ve spaced my villagers houses fairly close together, and because i want them to have a really spacious backyard, Ive built cliffs around their houses so they can climb up and have their backyards there. One problem— can they climb up cliffs?

i’ve only ever seen a villager on a cliff if that’s where their house is, and I’m worried none of my villagers will be able to access their yard

IF there are stairs or inclines and paths that lead up there, then they can access it.

They also spawn on cliffs even if there are no stairs. At least, that is my experience!

As mentioned, they can spawn on cliffs but that's entirely random. Having a direct path leading to it give higher chances of accessibility.

They also spawn on cliffs even if there are no stairs. At least, that is my experience!

In my experience they only spawn on the cliffs if their house is on the same cliff.

My first impressions playing NH was that villagers couldn't go anywhere that didn't have stairs and/or bridges leading up to it. They may have changed it in an update considering people were trapping villagers they didn't like left and right. I also have not seen them using their actual doors to go in/out of their houses for a long time either now that I think about it. I remember there was a glitch with that so they may have changed it too. Sad.

In short, now they probably just teleport places. I never saw them in my campsite area though which didn't have stairs yet.

No, I have encountered my villagers many times on cliffs with no access, and I have all their houses on the beach. I guess it is just random.
