Can I have some help please? (Playing ACNL on multiple systems)

I need some help, I'm a bit confused.

I play ACNL on my New3DS. I play it on a cartridge.
I plugged the cartridge into a different 3DS, and instead of my game data appearing, it said "Start Game" on the title screen of the game.

I'm confused, because normally if you play on the cartridge, your data is saved to the cartridge. So why is it, that when I plugged the cartridge into a different 3ds, my data wasn't there?

Any help is appreciated. cx

What if, in the "other" 3DS, I put in my cartridge and start a new game? Would that screw things up when I put the cartridge back into my New3DS?

If you put the game on your New3DS, you still have your "old" town but I don't know what happen if you start a new game on the other 3DS... :/

When I switched my game carts between my 3DSes, I had to update it before I could play it. Once you update it on both systems it should play just fine.

Pretty much this. Cartridge and 3Ds must match. No mixin'.
