Can gyroids build up over time?

Since a couple of weeks ago I have been TTing day-by-day in my town after TTing back to April, in all of that time I didn't bother digging up fossils and gyroids.

I've just done a mass-dig session in my town, and i've now collected a whole museum exhibit room full of gyroids.

I was just wondering, is it possible for gyroids to build up over time? If so, i'll be digging things up daily haha.
