Cardboard box, which I believe is re orderable (you start the game with one) and take it to Re-Tail 10 bells to customize it to have the oranges!

Yup, definitely cardboard boxes, customized.
The "pumpkin" is probably tangerines or tomatoes.

Is that true that you start the game with one? I don't remember getting one when I started and the first time I catalogued it was when a villager gave me one recently. I've also restarted as a side character recently and didn't get one either.

I know you started with one in City Folk, but I don't think you do in New Leaf.

You don't start New Leaf with one, but you did in previous games. :>
