Bushes!!

I thought you could plant 12 bushes\trees and then the 13th plant would die or am I wrong here? I have a pattern of bush - bamboo - bush - bamboo thing in a little square thing, with 11 plants. But the last one always dies.. whyyy?

It looks like this and there will go a BUSH where the hole is - it will be the 12th plant .. what am i doing wrong??

Bamboos act like trees and can't be placed diagonal without a space inbetween them.

I know, those arent the problem, it's the last bush.. it's gonna go where the hole is - so its a bush and not a bamboo\tree.. it will be the 12th plant that would be where the hole is, i just digged it up because the plant was dead.. so i dont understand why it died
