I have buried around the top half of my town items that you can?t buy in the marts for other people to dig up and keep. I buried things like fortune cookie items and the aurora screen? Nobody who has visited my town has cared to keep any of them though. Am I mistaken in thinking these items are desirable?

There's some value to them, but everyone can get those. And most people won't dig things up unless its cleared with you, as it's common Animal Crossing etiquette. It's like not running through someone's town.
Or you could say to them something like "hey! I've buried lots of unreorderables for you to dig up - they're free for you to take"
Whenever someone would visit I would say I buried things around the top half of the town that they can dig up and keep. They would then (most times) dig up a few items, but end up burying them again right after. I guess there's not as many people in the world that are like me as I thought, who would keep them at the very least to go sell them for bells again!
