I wasn't going to get Galaxy 2 but now I am cause I never beat my galaxy 1 (I helped my cousin beat his) so im going to finish 1 then get 2

You don't have to play SMG 1 to get SMG 2.
SMG 2 takes place in an alternate universe where SMG never happened.

Well, that's exactly it. Super Mario Galaxy 2 takes place in a different timeline because the story isn't important. Nintendo wanted to make it so that you can play Super Mario Galaxy 2 without having played the first Super Mario Galaxy and still get the same experience. By adding an alternate timeline, they made a simple way of cutting off the events of the original Super Mario Galaxy so that the sequel isn't dependent to it. It may appear that Nintendo is making the story overly complicated with the alternate timeline, but it's just the opposite; they're making the timeline overly simple. Nobody cares which timeline a Mario game takes place in, they just play it because it's fun. Story is an afterthought in Mario games. It doesn't matter nearly as much as the gameplay, which is what makes Mario "Mr. Video Game".
