Birthdays, Presents, and Personalities!

So, I've been playing Animal Crossing for a long, long time, but admittedly I very rarely have bothered with Villager birthdays. I know, right - worst mayor ever! Most of the time I'm too busy to indulge, or I completely forget, walk into the villager's house, and am stuck with no gift to give.

However, my main town is set a few months back so today it happens to be 8/14, which is also both Leopold and Rod's birthdays! So I decided I would actually go get them both a gift and show up. Sadly, the store didn't have very good options for gifts today. I snagged a Dart-Board for Rod (it seemed kind of sporty?) and a Sphinx model for Leopold. Leopold's gift was kind of a joke (the only other option was a lawn chair) because the Sphinx PwP is the only one he's ever suggested for me, lol.

Anyway, so I visit Leopold first and hand him my gift, expecting a generic default happy "Thank you!" Instead I was surprised to see his reaction was... not so pleased. He didn't really like it at all! I don't think I've ever had a villager not be happy with a birthday gift! On the other hand, Rod didn't seemed opposed to his gift, but made a comment about wondering where he would fit it.

So now I'm kind of wondering, is this random? Is it based on their personality? Are smug villagers more likely to dislike what you give them? Or do certain villagers/personalities prefer certain types of gifts over others?

No it's not random. Villagers prefer gifts more than others.

They definitely have preferences. It seems to be a random assignment, not based on personality. I use the Thonky Guide most of the time. Kind of running into a wall for Beardo's birthday, but I'll figure something out.

That stinks that Leopold was so dismissive of his present. Hopefully you can get closer to the mark next time.

Wow, I had absolutely no idea! And I've used Thonky before for other things! I've just never seen anything about Villagers and birthday gifts before. That's super great to know, thank you both!!

You can't please them all the time. Once, I found the perfect gift for one of my favorite varmints only to get the rather huffy "I already have one of those". I took a lot of time finding it so.... Bottom line: That varmint got Amiibo'd out not too long after his/her b'day. Yes, I can hold agrudge against a cluster of pixels. ;D

I usually buy their gift after they send me the invitation. I use thonky.com's gift guide for each villager. Then when the gift comes in the mail, I just store it in the invitation until the party day.

Lol! That's too funny xD I think i recall a Snooty doing that to me once, but I usually get too attached to my villagers to boot them out ;;

I used to just give them some random item I didn't want but then discovered thonky's gift guide. But I still only go to birthdays of my favourite villagers.

That is a good idea! I have a habit of not immediately checking my mail, so i sometimes miss the invites
