Trading Birthday cupcakes

Yesterday it was my birthday and I think I messed up. I got 8 cupcakes and I went right away to sleep and now I discovered you have to trade them to your villagers fpr exclusive bday items, but every time I try to, they just give me normal items. Did I mess up or the chance is super low?
Anyone interested in trading bday items for some of my cupcakes? I only have the hat atm so any other item is cool.

I think you have to give the items to your villagers on your birthday. I think there's still a chance of getting regular items, but they should also give you birthday items if it's your birthday. I tested out giving cupcakes on a day that wasn't my birthday and didn't have any luck getting birthday things at all.
