Better to refuse?

When a villager asks u a favor is it better to refuse or to fail it? Which one brings down friendship? I tried searching this up but some said its better to fail and others said its better to refuse o_o???

I think it's better to fail, usually they're like "Oh, you must've been busy, at least you tried." Whereas when you simply refuse they say "You won't even try? Oh well..."

If you're going off what they say, I've refused and have had them say to me, "oh you're probably busy"

its better to just straight up say no instead of saying yes and end up not doing it. im assuming it'll bring down friendship, but im not entirely sure about that

I fail. Refusing to their face seems too harsh. But if I am really in a pinch, I will say no and then talk to them at least three or four times just to make them happy again. The guilt!!

I always turn down rather than fail. Both seem pretty detrimental TBH.

What I do is talk to them and accept and then not do it.

Then I time travel back to the same day because my town is done and even if we arent friends they cannot leave cuz it never changed days lmao

I fail, because I feel like they just forget they even asked, but when I refuse, they get all sad. Though if they arrange to meet you at your or their house at a certain time, it's better to refuse, because they get all mad if you don't show up.

I have looked this up too and I'm not sure anyone knows for sure, but I think it's better to refuse than to fail, unless they catch you while cycling and your going backwards because they tend to forget it happened in that case in my experience as if they visit or something then you go backwards no present..but in general if it's hard or there is no time I'd just refuse it, they may ask for something else later that's easier.
