Best way to swap items between cartridges?

I have 2 cartridges and 1 3DS.

I want to restart one of my towns, and transfer my items from my first cartridge to my second.

Do I have to use another 3DS? My boyfriend has one but I'll avoid bugging him to use it if I have to.

Can I send letters to my mayor from another town, or something like that?

If I do borrow my boyfriend's 3DS, can I have both of my towns open at the same time on both consoles and visit the town using the wifi in my house?

If you use your boyfriends, I'm pretty sure you can have both towns open and go between the two.

The only other way I can think of is to ask someone on here to hold your things for you while you restart.
