I've been considering buying one of the games for 3DS. I have played games from this franchise before but never on 3DS. I'm just kind of wondering what the difference is between the new games and what would be the best to buy. If you have any hints for starting out the game I would also love to hear those!

You pretty much have 3 choices at this moment. A New Beginning, A Tale of Two Towns, and The Lost Valley.
Story of Seasons will be coming out at the end of this month (for NA, I know of) and that will probably be your best option.

Out of the 3 you could get right now, I've played A New Beginning and as an owner of 15 Harvest Moon titles, I was really disappointed by that game. It was really geared toward beginning Harvest Moon players, so I was disappointed but if you're trying to get back into the series, I think it's an excellent game.

A Tale of Two Towns looked kinda boring to me and when I read a lot of negative reviews about it, I decided not to try it out. And the same with The Lost Valley. It's kind of just a game they put together just to slap the Harvest Moon title on so hopefully players would see the title and assume it was going to be a great Harvest Moon game. But it looks pretty terrible to me.

If you want to look into the games some more yourself, I personally love using http://www.fogu.com for tons of Harvest Moon information! These are just my opinions, and I haven't tried all the newer games, so I encourage you to try out the website.

story of seasons is supposedly coming out the 31st of this month, and i'm definitely getting that on release! it looks fun to me!

i would probably go with a new beginning if you don't want story of seasons. although it is flawed and it has a slow start, it is overall a wonderful game !! the characters are good, and all the new customization and everything makes it even better.

i can't really say much for tale of two towns. i bought it but just never got into it. you might like it though. who knows!

lost valley isn't really harvest moon...the company that made it (natsume) just owns the title and decided to throw it together. maybe the fact that the case has a typo on the back says something .....?

I'd say Story of Seasons! I have Tale of Two Towns and A New Beginning and are both great games, but I've watched an English translation of the Japanese version of Story of Seasons (let's play) and it looks even better!

You really can't go wrong with any of the 3 versions for 3DS but I'd go for Story of Seasons if you can wait until the 31st! ^.^

Story of seasons and A New beginning seem to be generally thought of as the best. I'll have to see the prices, obviously a lot of people are excited for Story of seasons but I don't know if I'm going to want to pay the full 40 dollars since I'm just getting into the series. However if it's only like a ten dollar price difference at this point I'll probably just get the new game. Is there any sort of multiplayer feature?

I know the general point of the game has nothing to do with multiplayer from the previous games, I just don't know if they've added something to the newer titles.

Yes there is some multiplayer but it's extremely limited in ANB. In ANB you are thrown into a field with your animals and other players and you randomly exchange an item with someone and there is NO chat system whatsoever. SOS still appears limited but is improved at least you can now actually visit another players farm and help them out crop wise I believe. There is also at least a limited chat feature in SOS were you can pick phrases from a preselected list.
