Be Aware?

I've never heard of plot resetting or duping corrupting anyone's file, although I suppose it theoretically could happen even if the odds are astronomically small. Whenever I plot reset (and I do it a lot), I always close the software via the home menu since that is a more controlled way of quitting the game than just pressing power. Basically, your game gets corrupted in one of two ways:

  • You do something really stupid like powering off while saving or messing with the SD card
  • It just happens and there is absolutely nothing you can do to prevent it (besides just not playing your game which kind of defeats the point)

I just found this on youtube xD
Just wondering

i actually accidentally popped the cartridge out once while saving and i freaked out. thank god nothing got corrupted.

The plot resetting and the duping ones are bull****. I used to dupe A LOT!!! And my data never got corrupted! It's very obvious that he is trying to sound smart without any actual knowledge about it.

Yeah, that's kind of what I thought. He seems to have no idea what the heck villager resetting is. If you are loading your mayor and getting Mr. Resetti, then it's already too late to villager reset.

I will never understand why people make video about things they don't understand, spreading misinformation. )-:

I have read multiple accounts from people who had this happen, 2 of which were on this site. It's why I keep my plot resetting to a minimum. Why no one wants to acknowledge it is beyond me.

Because the number of people that corrupt while plot resetting compared to the people that plot reset without problems is too small to not be considered simply luck (or bad luck, in this case). I've been in these forums since the game was released and really, there are too many variables for corrupted files, everyone blames theirs on different things. It's hard to conduct some proper testing, too.

If anything player-related attributes to corrupted files, I would have to say it's ejecting the game before closing the software.

My cartridges have never corrupted (good luck, maybe?), but my hubby's first town corrupted and from what I know of what happened, it's because he didn't close the software before ejecting the cartridge.

As far as the digital copies go, I genuinely couldn't say. But it happens with enough frequency to keep me from ever buying a digital copy of this game.

I am always scared of having my data corrupted. >_< Although I do not believe the duping and plot resetting one, I'm scared it'll happen randomly out of a small chance. D:

I guess I am another that has two other towns I use for duping and I have done it in City folk and New Leaf ... a lot ... mainly to dupe fertilizer trying to spawn hybrid flowers ... I burn thru 5 bags a day.
Anyhow ... I don't think this is a problem at all as it has never happened to me.

I kinda do ... this person is just sharing what happen to her and why she thinks it happened.
Those of us that do duping, time travel, and such other antics know this is a very rare event.
I thank her for the heads up and admire she took the time to do a video about it ... that was not a simple thing to do .... but most of us know it don't happen very often and the risk is very low.

You know the "new" 3ds xl units don't have a wifi switch so I guess that is the way Nintendo is fixing the "duping" thing.

Personally ... I will never let go of my old 3ds with the switch I modified to allow a more accurate trip point.

Really? It happens more often, but I still don't hear about it too much. I figure it has to do with people fiddling with their SD cards, trying to alter other things and then they accidentally mess up the ACNL file.

Why/how could data corruption even happen from plot resetting, anyway? I'm not saying I don't think it can happen, I just don't understand how it works.

Plot-resetting I know for sure isn't the sure-fire way of corrupting your game. Resetting altogether isn't really a way to corrupt your game, unless you do it while saving the actual game. Duping isn't exactly a corruption way as well because you're disconnecting while it saves online activities, not actual game activities, which effect the programming of the game.

There are stories of corruption due to duping, but only on local. I haven't heard of any corruptions during wifi.

I personally found this on YT, I do not know if any of this is actually true

I guess that turning your game on and off a lot (which is what resetting is) could cause trouble with your game but the odds aren't that big. Even pressing the power button when it's saving isn't guaranteed to mess up your game. It's not something you should do, but I did it once (it was an accident) and it was fine.

Just because something has a chance of happening, it doesn't mean it's a 100% chance. And that's if resetting does mess up your game. We can speculate that it does when people report doing it and their game being corrupted but we don't know if that was really the cause or if there are other factors.

It's up to each person to decide how much they want to risk it.
