Wherever a bamboo thicket can be contained by natural elements of your town, such as an area where a tree grove might block it from expanding on the left, a river might block it on the top and right, and a public project might block it on the bottom.
I think bamboo looks great anywhere, but maybe I'm just crazy! I put some around my campground, near Pekoe's house, and sort-of bordering the train tracks. I also made a little park using them as a border. Yes, they grow like crazy, but that's not a huge problem if you make sure to check every day for buried shoots - you can sell them for 750 bells each!
I planted mine by my house not knowing what it was. My house area looked awful with them! I would avoid planting it personally because they can get annoying how much they spread!
I highly suggest against planting it wildly. Plant it in an enclosed path space, to prevent it spreading. Bamboo in Animal Crossing is a worse weed than actual weeds.
Plant it where you can surround it at least 2 spaces every way, unless you want to grow more. I have bamboo (purposely) everywhere except one corner of my town in place of trees, and at first it was a nightmare. Now pretty much my entire town is covered in flowers, so it doesn't matter much anymore.
