why have so many of these threads popped up all of a sudden?

Blame GamerCat.

Basically, she was being rude and annoying on the 'ask the staff' thread and also kept answering questions which were for the staff. Then, after she crossed the line, she asked if she could make an 'ask gamercat' thread. It was closed pretty quickly.
