I want to visit quite badly but my Spanish is extremely poor (damn Canadian schools teaching French and whatnot). I know I'd probably get by but I'd like to know at least the basics.

I do! Madrid is beautiful. You should definitely visit sometime! I'm sure you would love it. You'd be surprised as to how many people actually know English over here, though. So you shouldn't let that stop you!
