Do you enjoy them, and do you have a favorite?

I'm partial to the old originals, like the NES and SNES games, like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy. But I still love the newer games, most recently Xenoblade Chronicles.

I am currently replaying Soul Blazer, and plan to play Final Fantasy 3 (6 in Japan) and Chrono Trigger.

I would love to hear suggestions, from the retro games until now!

I was neutral on them until I inherited my grandad’s SNES with Chrono Trigger, then it was lights out. When I was 18 I spent my first paycheck on an Earthbound cartridge, and it’s my favorite game of all time.

Final Fantasy is hit or miss for me, IX is my absolute jam. Xenoblade 1 and 2 (1 moreso) were great and I need to finish 3. Overall I don’t like how a lot of JRPGs are turning into Action RPGs, I like being able to plan and execute turns.

That might start changing thanks to the success of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. They have made a lot of companies realize that people still enjoy turn based RPG's.

I read somewhere that Square Enix even acknowledged that with Final Fantasy going from turned based games to action and that they realize thats where their roots are.

It's my favorite genre, but they tend to build up in my backlog since I spend a lot of time on short indie games or platformers.

My favorites are the Persona/Shin Megami Tensei games, Ys, Trails of, Atelier, Xenoblade Chronicles (mainly the original), and Dragon Quest. Despite owning most mainline Final Fantasy games, the only one I've beaten is IV. I'm working on changing that as right now I'm playing some of Final Fantasy I and X. The original very much feels like a game from the 80s, but I'm enjoying its simplicity. Final Fantasy X on the other hand is making me feel like a kid again when games had a "magic" to them. Another JRPG I've been getting into is the Rune Factory series.

I am also bummed that action RPGs seem to take so much of the spotlight nowadays. I'm not as good at action games and being able to take my time to strategize in turn based games never gets old. There's a lot that can be done with the subgenre and it's a shame many people didn't realize that until Expedition 33 released.

I really enjoy hearing about Final Fantasy X making you feel like a kid again! Its funny you also mentioned FF1 because that is the game that makes me feel like a kid again! I got the NES console four or five years after every other kid I knew. But along with it, some video game store employee told my Dad that Final Fantasy was the next big thing. I hadn't heard about it, and none of my friends had either. It was the one time I was at the beginning of something popular, and all of my school mates wanted to play the game at my house. It was kind of a nice feeling!!

That employee knew what they were talking about!

Isn't it funny how things change, and then eventually swing back towards what made it good in the first place? The pendulum never stops 😀

I am a HUGE Dragon Quest fan. In fact, I was having trouble picking between a slime or Usagi as my avatar for this forum lol.

But yeah, I generally like a lot of JRPGs, but I haven't sank my teeth in one in a very long time. I might give Expedition 33 a shot (it counts, right?) since I'm borrowing it from a friend, but another RPG I also really want to attempt finishing is Grandia on the PS1.

I should probably change the title for this thread to just RPG. They dont have to be Japanese, even though RPG's seem to originate from the early JRPG's like Dragon Quest a d Final Fantasy. The influence is everywhere, and with Clair Obscur it seems like maybe some old mechanics are making a comeback. I love it!
