Recently I was able to get New Leaf (not the amiibo version). I was wondering if we are still able to visit other player's towns? The reason I'm asking is I have not been able to get the Apple or Orange fruit trees yet.

Yes, online play is still supported and Nintendo has not given any date of cancellation yet. Though if your game isn't Welcome Amiibo you may have to update before playing. Don't worry, it is completely free to download as long as you already have ACNL.

I'm pretty sure you still can as long as the game is on its latest update. After that, you can just connect with someone locally or obtain their friend code then go there when visiting a faraway town.
