are villagers poor?

In Animal Crossing Wild Word, the people of Boondox are so poor that they have to eat dirt to survive. As you donate bells to the people of Boondox, you learn that Tiny Tommy Hicks is able to have a proper 5th birthday due to your generosity. Surely, the universal base income does not extend to the people of Boondox.
However, Tiny Tommy Hicks appears to be a clear alternate-universe version of the Tommy we know and love. So why don't the people of Boondox have a universal base income? It appears to me that the villagers of our island are abusing the welfare system by faking disabilities, and as a result, cheating the people of Boondox out of their rightful share.
I completely forgot about Boondox in WW.

I don't feel very charitable to the villagers on my island, but I'd happily pay relocation costs and then some for them to move out.

I always kind of imagined they were just peacefully living off the bounty of the town/island? They fish and shake trees, and make reference to eating fruit. They probably make a little cash like we do by pawning stuff off to Nook.
Maybe they just don't ask for much? My irl dog loves her teeny, concrete-covered city backyard, and my irl cats love their cardboard boxes... No reason to think AC animals aren't as easy-going. And we all take care of them!

(Or, like feral animals, why work for it when we literally hand them food and furniture? Haha!)

EXACTLY!
There is no way that Lucky has been injured for 20 years.
He wears bandages but walks around fine, I even saw him lifting dumbells the other morning.
Also Ankha, she acts as a tourist attraction "look at me i'm from ancient Egypt, my dad is Tutan Khamu btw" turns out she forgot to take off her Halloween costume.
And don't even get me started on Joey.
I'm sorry but having a weak bladder and wearing a diaper does not mean you should be entitled to welfare.

It's time to wake up and smell the coffee people.

Maybe they're just fans of Marie Kondo, and prefer to live minimalist lives?

I'd like to think that they're all just big savers or are spending money on things we can't see. For example, Ava mentioned wanting to call her parents yesterday - maybe she's saving her money to send back home and is satisfied with a small house?

Raymond has an office interior, maybe he's big on the stalk market and this is his office. When we're sleeping, maybe he goes back to his home island to live the big life. Maybe he thinks we're poor and doesn't want to openly flaunt his wealth...

i’m convinced all the smug villagers are trust fund babies, i listened in on a conversation between sherb and raymond and they were discussing meals their mothers would make them. sherb’s mom would make him like mac and cheese and such but raymond was out here listing these fancy dishes i can’t even pronounce 😔

They're living happy, fulfilling lives on an island where their needs are all provided for and they're free to pursue their various interests and hobbies to enrich their lives rather than seeking a soul-crushingly tiny profit from them. Who's really poor here?
