I think you are both arguing the same point! Not to butt in to your discussion or anything...but I really don't see what went wrong. :/
ALLCAPS did summarize what everyone's saying. There IS a difference in the word choice of fee or tip. If people don't know that difference, that's why we're all commenting on this thread. They should know the difference.
Twisk--I get what you're saying about how some people are rude or take advantage of the host's kindness. But unfortunately that's a risk you take for socializing with strangers in this game. You can also meet a lot of really cool people that makes it worthwhile. Which I think you seem to understand...so I'm not really telling you, just reminding you. It's part of the generous act when someone lets you into their town, that they are TRUSTING people and taking that risk. They don't have to do it if it really makes them TOO uncomfortable. Or they can charge a fee to feel better. But asking for a tip (or really even hinting at one) is the same as charging a fee, in my eyes.
There's nothing WRONG with that. People are free to charge a fee, of course, and set whatever rules they like. But I can CHOOSE not to go to those towns, if I have the option to go to someone else's town who I feel is really just being generous without expecting anything in return. It makes me want to give them the same generosity they're giving to others. Then tipping is actually fun (and means something) instead of being obligatory or forced.
