Are autumn tree leaf colors preset?

I've been trying to mix mash different colors and found out I can't. If I dig up a yellow leaf hardwood and try and replace it with a dark red one it turns into a yellow leaf hardwood like the one that was originally planted there.

I wanted to place all different autumn color hardwoods around my campsite area and it seems like I failed. Unless all hardwoods eventually turn red before the snow comes and there's no point in worrying.

I am not entirely sure about this, but I bet it works the same way as weeds do, where there can be a few variations and the one you end up with is based on its location.

I saw this in action when I had a weed farm (for the achievement) and it was always the same ones in the same spot.

This would you can only pick the colour or the exact spot you put your tree in, unfortunately. You could try moving it around a few spots to see if that helps you find the colour you're looking for!

The trees do get more red as we get later in the month. Some a little more dark than others.

I think it's a nice touch for there to be variations in color. Makes it look more natural.

That's good to know! I have a bit of a hardwood tree forest and I was wondering if I would have to chop down trees and plant new ones to get them all to be red... Some are still yellowish green or brown, and I thought those may perhaps have been leftover money trees and that that was the reason they didn't turn red

Ya, the color of tree is designated to where you plant it.

Whether or not you can change that or reset it is unknown. I tt back before the October color change and I swear when I came back the trees were different colors as to what they were previously.

Actually, for weed growth stages 1 and 2 it can be different, it's just they all look the same at stage 3. Source

It appears to be random which "stage 1" weed it will be.
