remember when on certain dates, the animals would talk to you about themselves?

like mable and sable had some sad past.
pete pelly and phylis had some love triangle going down.

it seems like, in new leaf all those stories ended, or resolved happily. heck even kapp'n found a special someone and had a kid.

itd be nice if porter talked about what he'd been upto since ACPG.
perhaps how the porcupine sisters reunited. i mean labelle has a gracie certification in her room!

....

and what of mrs nook?!

Someone bought this up in another thread the other day.

I miss these things too, but there are a couple of odd little bits like this. ~ Lyle has 2 or 3 little after hours stories and you get snippets from cafe conversations. But yeah, I miss the scale it used to be on with their weeklong episodes.

They could have added stories for the police dog you don't have, and why Brewster split for the museum. Shrunk could tell you what happened with Frillard etc.

I played the DS and Wii versions of animal crossing, but not enough to learn the back stories... Do you know anywhere online where it would explain that? Now I"m curious, and really wishing they still did it in AC;NL!

I know there are guides out there as I remember reading them back when CF came out. A lot of them were things that would have happened naturally in the game anyway.

I know right! Imagine walking into your station and Copper/Booker being in thought and then wondering what his partner in anti-crime is up to. And then the next time they say they got in contact with them, and then something like the day after every aurora / storm / something they then visit and you can see them together in the cafe or just at work chatting or something.

The episode stories in WW and CF were amazing - the tales Sable told about her past actually made me a bit teary now and again.

(Yeah, I'm a sucker for a sad story.)

Out of all the dialogue in the old games, the bit that genuinely moved me was Sable's anecdote about having made a pair of mittens for her sister during one cold winter when they were children.

---

I do miss that level of attachment to the characters; it really immersed me in the game.

Still, I understand why they didn't include those sort of conversations in NL; the game has a more lively tone, and such melancholic themes wouldn't suit the mood.

That's so true! I think in City Folk, it was implied that Kicks was either homeless or extremely poor, doing business on some run-down stairs. Now he's got his own shop. It's seems like everyone's lives are just fantastic in this ACNL. I guess that's not a bad thing, but it's not a good thing either.

The dialogue the villagers have seems more repetitive too, based on my hazy childhood memories of WW and things I've read. Like a villager will say something about how they're eating *insert food name from a list* three times in a row.

Its interesting when they talk to each other, but its so rare and hard to catch. I think NL has a more "just go play the game" attitude, where older games were more about soaking in the game and experiencing the town. NL is more about shaping the town.

new leaf is the first and only AC game i've played so far... so i didn't know the previous AC games was more "RPG-like"... i think if they kept this element in new leaf it would not be as boring.

i don't like talking to my villagers much because it's always just small talk and shooting the breeze, they don't feel like real conversations. especially when they just start repeating things over and over. :(

If you talk to Sable, sometimes she starts to get a little nostalgic, and Mabel chastises her for being down in the dumps when they've made up with Labelle and she is working the shop with them. Also, sometimes if you talk to Lyle, he gossips about the others on Main Street. There is still some of the back story, just not to the extent that it used to be.

The back stories and such are quite fun, so it is sad they don't have them as much. There are so many things they could add or put back into the next game.

This is one of the features I miss about the old games. I only ever witnessed Blathers' stories, and I guess that's why he's one of my favorite characters.
