I'm looking into Halo for the Xbox. I've watched videos and did the research- but it's beyond new territory for me. I've only played Nintendo consoles/games. hehe

What is it like? :)

Last year I tried Halo for the first time. The first game. I didn't like it - too archaic for a new fan. Other than that, I can't help you.

I wish! My partner loves this game and wants someone to play with. The online community is something I would rather not participate with though unfortunately. I am not into shooters either really.

In all honesty, I play it to kill time. I don't play online, I only play Story Mode and Local Multiplayer mode.

I've played ODST, 4 and I think Reach. I don't understand why there was a complete shift in POV from ODST to 4, Story Mode only takes a few hours with someone, less if you're good or have already played it, and Mutliplayer is where the real fun is. BUT I play with my sister, and we like to do stupid stuff in 4s(?) multiplayer mode. We one time spawned a bunch of barrels, cars and random furniture just to keep blowing it up. Good times.

Overall, I really can not see the appeal in it. It's a quick shooter game with little story to it, little play time, little repeat playability, and it's the same thing, shoot opponents.

I've played a lot of halo reach, between the new halo reach collection on steam, as well as the original halo 360.

Halo comes in two parts. The first is that the guns all FEEL good, nearly all of them are first person shooters, so having a gun that feels both weak and strong is really nice. There are shields in the game that block bullets, and once they're down the enemies become really weak, so using weapons tactically is an important part of the game.

Other than that the multiplayer is really enjoyable, just like with any first person shooter it's fun to get riled up over beating enemies and the different gamemodes.

Of note though, is that a large part of why I enjoy halo is because of the nostalgia, being able to jump in and figure things out really fast was really fun. All in all, I'd say that any halo game you can play with even just one friend would be really good. A lot of halo games are definitely good, but they fill in an already relatively full genre. If you're interested in a single player first person shooter campaign, halo is good! if you're interested in some fun multiplayer too, halo is also good! If you want some cheap good value just go for the halo reach master chief collection and get most of them, and play whatever.

if you want some more opinions you can try to ask me but I've tried to put in what I've thought about it.

Oh yeah it's also nothing like a nintendo game, it's gritty and a first person shooter.

Thanks for the advice! They sound really enjoyable, and I plan on getting the Master Chief Collection sometime soon.

I'm so excited to play something that's near the opposite of what I've been playing all these years.

Oh boy, well I played halo since the first one combat evolved. I stopped playing past halo 4. If your looking for a couch co-op shooter then I really recommend the series. Mainly 1 to 4 plus ODST and halo reach. The reason why is because they supported split screen co-op.

Is it story-driven? I know it's for the most part combat, but is the does the lore require understanding to enjoy the game?

No, no. You can play the games and you'll pick up on the story as you play. Have fun with it! grab yourself a buddy and binge through the series. It would be hard for you to take it seriously if you go in purely for the story. I say this because the games have a quirky charm to them, especially the first one which would throw you off if you went in for just the story. But if you enjoy the games and get invested in them, the franchise has a crazy amount of lore to sink your teeth into.

I cannot say for the halo games past 4 as I've not played them, but I recommend playing Halo 1 with a buddy split screen and binge through it :)

I've played every Halo game except Halo 5 but I think the series has lost its edge since Bungie stopped making the games and 343 took over.To me the best thing about the Halo series is the actual feel of playing the games....the controls are excellent for the most part, the weapons are interesting and varied and the action(at least in the Bungie made games)can be very intense. The story for most of the games seems secondary to the action.I think ODST and Reach are the only games in this series in which the story at least kind of meshes with the action.Overall, the Bungie made games are a lot of fun. There isn't a lot of thinking required but the games play so well you don't really mind.I have the Master Chief Collection for the Xbox One and I recommend it.It has remastered versions of Halos 1-4 and if I'm not mistaken I think ODST and Reach are now available remastered.

I can proudly say that I've played all seven major titles!
It was a game I had growing up, definitely the most amount of time was spent in Halo 2, really enjoyed ODST actually.
I remember the first one was so groundbreaking when it came out. I remember running it on my Windows 98 PC, and it ran it, just barely. Then I moved onto the Xbox.
Definitely fun, and the reworked Master Chief Collection was a great walk down memory lane. But as some of the others mentioned, the newer FPS games definitely did spoil me, and while the gameplay was fun, some of the mechanicals and details were aggravating!
