Anyone else not a fan of custom clothes/paths in this game?

Don't get me wrong, I've seen a lot of wonderful designs floating around, and I don't mean to knock anyone's creativity, my beef isn't with the quality of designs people post online.

Thing is - custom clothes in this game are "flat" compared to in-game ones. In NL it didn't matter, because all clothing was the same (the kimono used the same model as dresses, for example), but in NH clothes have a lot more texture to them, so when you put, for example, an in-game kimono next to someone's design... the difference is apparent.

Custom paths have the same problem - they look "flat," which is especially noticeable when you put them next to basic paths. They look a bit more low-res. Not only that, they don't show up on the map as paths, and they don't have unique footstep sounds, which bothers me, lol.

What do y'all think?

I guess that’s the problem with such a glow up. The devs have the ability to add spectacular textures to non-customizable clothes, while we stick to modified pixel art. I feel like it would be a bit TOO much if that was added, however.

Yeah, I miss the footsteps sound with custom paths. Otherwise I'd use them. Custom clothes look flat too and it's unfortunate because there's not much designers can do to make them look more natural.

It would be a perfect world if we could use all the tools the devs have, like a more refined drawing tool and textures like shiny/metallic or whatever, but I think it's good for what it is. Some really craft people out there can emulate that stuff with just the pixels, it blows my mind. I personally don't try to go crazy with it, I just make like prints and designs intended to be used on the existing knit sweater or dress shirt or what have you. That way, I'm usually not disappointed by the outcome lol

yeah I really wish we had the option to choose ground pattern sounds.. ended up removing all of my paths a little while ago and I'm much happier having the grass sounds back. I still have some custom pattern patches of dirt, but I think the soft sound makes enough sense for that.
I still like the look of a lot of the custom paths though, I saw a light blue snowy version of "the path" last night and I bet it would look so cute in winter.. too bad you'd miss that good ol snow cronch </3

I avoid using custom designs for the same reasons you listed - they just don't look right, or like they belong in the game to me, no matter how well they're done.

I don't use custom designs. I'm not a designer so it's not something I would have much fun doing, and while I know there's an infinite amount of amazing designs out there I'm much happier with just the standard options. I know myself and if I tried to use custom designs for pathways my island would be a mess right now. I'm very happy with keeping my island simple and neat with the standard terraforming options given to us.

I tried the custom paths because some of them look really really nice but I got tired of the accidental erasing all the time and yes... the flat sound. I like the footstep sounds on the regular paths. The custom clothes are ok.

Only custom designs I have are an Ohio State logo for my town flag and a railroad track for my throwback containers. Otherwise, my map is al natural.

I am very picky with my custom designs. Most of the ones I use are just for signs or all over fabric patterns. I don't use any path designs because I miss the footstep noise.

I am also very picky with the clothes. I'm getting better with designing clothes, but I still have a long way to go. Some people out there are amazing. But I still stick to designs that look more basic and that don't try to emulate skin or super 3D textures.

i refuse to use custom paths because of no footstep sounds, yes there is a sound but it's pretty flat and bland imo

I came in here to say this as well lol. I have an urban area that I use the game's cobblestone path for and I wanted to overlay it with my own street markings and paths. I tried it for a while and I hated how bland it sounded so I had to remove it.. I missed the clack clack clack noises 🤣 I do think a lot of custom paths look a bit flat (I'm def no expert at making them) but a lot of people make really convincing ones, especially urban/street designs where the whole town is covered with them. I still can't bring myself to do this though because I'd miss the sound effects :(

I agree with that, though ironically one of my issues happens to be with the models that do have detail, and the restrictions they impose. Most of the designs seem to have extra bits, like collars or rolled sleeves or something, I couldn’t find a long sleeve shirt that’s just a straight shirt. Maybe it’s just the OCD, cause that stuff probably isn’t as noticeable from the camera distance, but I would have liked the option to have a blank shirt template and the ability to add the extra bits like buttons and pockets and then being able to modify sleeve length or whatever.

I think the original paths look a little too uniform in texture, but I do miss the clatter of footsteps.

I quite like custom paths and clothes c: sure there are some downsides, but imo it allows for more creativity and originality between islands. Otherwise you'd be seeing the same original paths everywhere.

As for custom clothes, it is true that we're limited with what we can design, but it's better than nothing tbh. it's just a matter of finding skilled creators with cute designs :^)

What bothers me the most is definitely the lack of sound on custom paths. I get they can't tell what "material" it is so they couldn't match a sound, but anything generic would have been nice, lol. Kinda takes me out when I'm running and suddenly it's silent. xD

As for the clothes, I've seen some really good designs and ones that seem by comparison flat. Along that, some have had too *much* detail and that's what makes them fall shy of looking good to me. I wish we could pick more templates to draw on, but what people have done is really clever.

I completely understand this! I've gotten semi-good at being able to hide the big line on the coat using shading, but that's only when there aren't too many colors. I think the basic sweater shape without the hood is the best for long sleeves, but yeah if you're not into that knitted texture then it can be difficult to work with.

I think the only surefire way would be to make them in NL and import via QR code. But not everyone has access to that, and the designs definitely look dated when transported over.

I also really don't like that custom paths don't make much sound, but I use them anyway.
If we had more path choices in game, I would probably not bother with custom paths.
It would save a lot of custom design slots, too. I'm not too big on clothes. My character
pretty much wears the adventure dress every day. I have found a couple of cute designs
though, mostly dresses.

I don't mind the clothes; in fact, I actually prefer custom clothes compared to NL because I didn't like all my c clothes looking like pixels.

What I'm NOT a fan of are the paths. Why on Earth do they have a teeny-tiny footstep sound? I get it's so that you can use them for anything, and it's better than hearing grass like in NL, but it would've been nice if they maybe had some sound options, like brick, wood, grass, sand, and dirt and then you could maybe just pick the one you want.

I like custom paths and clothes and use them. I do wish the resolution were higher, because even with smoothing, it can look jagged and flat. Also wish there were more clothes meshes to work with -- especially a knee length dress with long sleeves and a full body tights.

It'd be nice if the sound would stay the same when overlaying paths, but it doesn't bother me too much since I play without sound most of the time.
