An age-old dilemna: You are now in charge of a trolley

Maybe if the 1 guy lays down he can escape under the trolley...

Panic until it is too late then decide to push the fat man off the bridge killing him with the fall but the people were already killed by the trolley.

I'm laughing so hard cuz I looked up trolley and I still have no idea whats going on

Sorry for derailing the thread a bit

I seem to see this question every couple of years. I've come to the conclusion that I would do nothing. If those five people were going to die anyway then it's not my responsibility. I could sleep at night knowing I wasn't responsible for anyone's death, and I wouldn't feel bad about it knowing that there is nothing I could have done without anyone dying. Its not my place to decide whether or not someone else should sacrifice themselves - it's that person's responsibility to decide if they're prepared to give up their own life in order to save five others; not mine.

That's what I feel too. Who knows if that fat man was really a brilliant scientist that was going to cure cancer or if those five people were in a criminal gang and were going to kill some people later on in life. I don't want to place value on number or who is who. I'd feel better if I wasn't responsible for intentionally murdering someone. :/

Remind me to post this again in 2016

Roll him off the bridge and onto the track behind the 5 people. No witnesses.

I didn't realize trolleys hurtling towards people were age-old dilemmas that occur often. The more important questions here are- who's driving the trolley? Why am I up here on a bridge with these people? Is the fat guy Santa? Why is this happening? Did I go on a drinking spree and challenge this man to a duel atop this bridge? So many unanswered questions.

Guys, it's a THOUGHT experiment that's been around since the 60s. It's supposed to make you think about ethics and morality, not the freaking mechanics of the trolley

why were they on a bridge???? go away!!!
but yeah as others stated I'm in no choice to determine who should live or who shouldn't. assuming they're all strangers tho

It's been around since the 60's, so clearly it's worth thinking about half a decade later? Let's at least update the "exercise". I've got one- you have a new Apple device that allows you to sync all the music you want onto it BUT, you have to charge it by sucking the life force out of every person you meet, which may or may not be someone you know. Is it worth it for the tunes, or for the fact that you can now kill whoever you want and charge your battery at the same time? Let it all sink in. Wow, feel that higher state of mind, somebody open a window, man.

Is that supposed to be sarcasm? Good one.
By the way, half a decade is 5 years.

Half a century. That's what I get for typing late. Golly, you sure showed me, I guess I'll just crawl back to my hole, because no one can take me seriously on the internet.

Also that was a totally legit "thought exercise". It's just as ludicrous as the other, and yet no one wants to give it a go?
