Any hobby or interest can get boring if you do it too much. There's nothing wrong with taking breaks. I feel like in modern society we're conditioned to do everything to an extreme. The landscape of gaming has changed significantly, many gamers I know are people who dedicate their entire lives to their fixation or their "craft" especially if they play eSports titles or MMOs, where colossal time investments are normalized.
While I don't think that's a bad thing on its own (and can often be a very good thing in some scenarios), I think it can absolutely be unhealthy as it fuels the perpetual dopamine addiction that just about everyone has at this point. I used to be one of those people where my primary focus would be whatever game I was playing and it would effectively become my life. I'm phasing out of that mindset because I just don't find it healthy, enjoyable, or sustainable for me anymore. It works great for some people, it's just not for me anymore.
My interest in gaming was significantly reinvigorated once I started venturing into more indie games. Smaller bite-sized games, or at least games that don't require a lot of investment to play and complete, that I can pick up and stop whenever I want without FOMO. I feel that if you play a lot of big games, you're more likely to be burned out and less likely to want to start something new because of the perceived commitment involved. I used to feel like I needed to get a ton of time or "value" out of every game I played, but once I dropped that mentality my enjoyment went up exponentially.
Gaming is supposed to be a fun hobby, but these days it can feel more like a chore, a job, or even a lifestyle than a hobby sometimes. It doesn't help that many games these days are specifically developed to maintain player retention by honing in on those daily chores or "obligations" because it's a money maker.
I'd still consider it my primary hobby, but my relationship to it is definitely changing, for the better in my opinion.
To anyone who thinks gaming is boring, I would recommend trying to use addictive social media / video apps less. In fact, delete them entirely. If your attention span is fried from TikTok/YouTube/etc, you are much less likely to be satisfied playing a game for an extended period of time. These lower attention spans do not only affect games; they are reducing our cognitive ability in work/play/social contexts, and degrading our quality of life.
Using these addictive apps as an escape from your own thoughts is also dangerous. We are meant to have boredom - it lets us sort through our problems, come up with new ideas, and get motivated to do awesome things. If you do not give yourself the time to do these things, you will slowly become part of the inevitable idiocratic society.
I agree with this wholeheartedly! I couldn't've said it better myself.
