After 2 years, I discovered this...

Ok...

I recently discovered how each music player sounds different. You'll obviously need good headphones or speakers to notice the difference. Stereos have more bass response while the phonograph/record players are static-y. The hi-fi stereo in particular sounds the best in terms of sound quality.

Nice touch Nintendo!

I noticed! And then my earbuds broke. Well, sort of. The left one still works. >.<

The difference in the entire game with earbuds is astounding. I highly suggest trying it out.

I think the music players sounded different in City Folk too (and maybe even WW, but I haven't played that in a long time so I don't remember). The phonograph is the most noticeable one to me.
