Afraid of going to the dentist need your help

Why again do they need a needle at the DENTIST to fix something??

I'm just shocked and asking because I've been to the dentist every 6 months my whole life and had tons of things that needed to be fixed and not once had they needed any sort of needle to do it.... In fact, needles are something usually used by doctors or nurses...

Needles at the dentist are mostly used to anaesthetize you before they start an operation

i've never had any dental surgery/intervention, i just turn up every year and they check my teeth and i've never had to have anything done, but i know that teeth are a real serious matter, it's not like a graze that will heal, this stuff turns into abscesses and food and bacteria will build up and cause a whole load more problems than you currently have.

dentists are not horrid - i always go with my mum to the dentist who has a whole load of work done, and not once have i seen a needle been used. sometimes you really have to get over some things in order to get what's best for you, you'll feel much better for it in the long run

Best advice is can give you is this.
Get a grip.

Seriously, I hate needles, but would you rather have no teeth or a tiny needle?

Don't EVER tell anybody to get a grip on their anxiety. It's not humanly possible and it only messes with them. Trust me.

Thanks for the tips so far I am just afraid of the worst I hope they don't ask me to have a root canal done to me. Have any of you ever had a root canal done if so how was the experience like cause I will most likely have a heart attack if they told me that I need to have one c.c.

I have had over 10 oral surgeries/procedures. I had braces for 4 years. I had a root canal that was never fully finished by an endodontist and never knew it and eventually over the years it got infected. I have so many stories. But I have no anxiety now because I found a dentist I can trust.

Needless to say I have had a lot of dental experience. I have had first time consultations with over 20 dentists over the years.

I am being totally serious - do the research in your area. Look at all the dentists. Look for ones that talk about "Sleep dentistry" or "Comfort Care" or various things like that. Those are the dentists who are usually compassionate for pain.

If you need a root canal you might be better off getting the tooth pulled, but I am not a dentist or a health professional in any way so I can not give you any advice.

In my personal experience I would never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever get a root canal. It was a waste of money and it damaged my health. But that's my personal opinion.

After having dental problems my whole life I have finally found a dentist I truly trust. To find him I consulted with other dentists around town and would not stop until I found one that I trust.

When I have procedures done they offer me an anti-anxiety medicine before they start, and let it work for 20 minutes before they begin. It really helps.

Thinking of you. I know you'll find someone. Lots of hugs! :)

I used to have horrible anxiety about the dentist too. I'd cry if I thought I needed to go. Tell them that you have a fear of needles and the experience as a whole. They would put stuff on a swap and put it in my mouth to numb me so I couldn't feel the needle prick. If they don't do everything they can to make your experience comfortable then find a new dentist the next time. That's what really helped me. I found a dentist that makes me feel comfortable and now I don't feel anxiety when I go!

I rather go to the dentist 5 times in one week than go to the gynecologist once in one year. Unfortunately, it must be done.

Really? I barely felt any pain when I got my teeth pulled or drilled. It's more pressure than pain.

Yeah, I had to get some teeth taken out, and I just felt so much pressure, I was like omg stopp

P.S: I love the dentist
I'm weird

WHAA ;A; why did it hurt so much for me xD I think I ended up getting 6-7 shots o.e I'm scared for when I'll have to get my wisdom teeth out.

i used to be scared of the dentist, when i was at elementary we went to the dentist to extract my tooth i was so scared i started crying but i remember i kept saying in my mind that its going to be over soon but my mom and the dentist's assistants ended up holding me down because i kept moving and turning my head until my mom pinched my nose so i'll end up breathing through my mouth and the dentist can extract the tooth. And now i just got over that fear idk it just happened maybe i got tired of being scared of the dentists, i even got braces now so i have to see one every month :/ i was also scared of needles and got over it too :)

if you can don't think too much about it, just remember it'll be over soon :)

Hopefully the needle won't hurt too much for you, it won't be as bad when I last went to the dentist. They had to rip a tooth of mine out when it kept chipping out. I survived it by looking at the light above. I tried to count the amount of colours I could see on it.

It'll hurt more if you keep not going. More things could go wrong or get worse that wouldn't hurt if you went every six months

I have the same weird fear of needles (I've delayed some blood tests for a few years that I should get, but really I don't care, I can't stand the thought of a needle at all.) When it comes to dentists though, I have no fear of them at all, since all of the anesthesia I've had was mainly the laughing gas because it works pretty well on me. One time I did get a shot of wicked nova-cane and it stung a little at first, but I tried not thinking about it. It helped me if I pretended I bit the inside of my mouth, because I occasionally do that.
