So I was sick in hospital for about a month and was very dehydrated for a while. It's since been a few months since I was discharged but my skin really hasn't recovered.
Haha, this might seem like an odd post to see on an acnl forum, but I've asked everyone I know and so far I haven't found anything that works.
Anyone have any good ideas? I've tried everything like E45 and vaseline.

Try 100% pure shea butter or coconut oil. These are all natural, are high in vitamins, and can buy them on Amazon. They might be more expensive then regular lotion but they work well and last a long time. Also, try drinking plenty of water a day!

Edit: Not sure if links are allowed on these forums or not, but if so here are a few good ones-

No problem, just a heads up sometimes coconut oil (and products containing coconut oil) make some people with sensitive skin breakout. It works fine for me but I would do a patch test first!

You can try argan oil or jojoba oil - these both are light oils that will absorb into your skin. I agree with Jordan Marek about the Shea butter - it's great if your skin is super dry but it will feel very greasy, I use this on my eye area at nighttime

try a water sleeping mask, i find it really helps with dehydrated skin (i love this one). apply, pat in and rub in. leave over night, wash in morning. i'd also recommend cerave's moisturizing lotion. you also might want to check what the pH of your current cleanser is, just in case it's stripping your skin some more~ and ofc lots of water. ++ gonna add argan oil, a lil goes a long way.

my skin is very sensitive/dry and I use aveeno on my body, it works fantastically. I'd also recommend gold bond if aveeno still isn't hydrating enough for you!

if it's for your face, I've heard good things about argan oil, but coconut oil clogs my pores big time so I never use it on my face. I use an organic cream from etsy + tamanu oil and that keeps my face well hydrated too. good luck! dry skin is awful :<

Well for intensive skin therapy/repair I use Aquaphor... It's also really good for tattoo healing.
Other wise i just use St. Ives for everyday use.

Sounds like your skin may have become dehydrated (lacking water) and is different to being dry (lacking oil). You can't treat dehydration with moisture and you can't treat dry with hydration (much to my surprise as well xAx) Lots of skincare products also tend to use the two terms interchangeably for some reason
Look for products with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin or honey to name a few.
It's not a moisturiser but after I started using this honey ampoule my skin stopped cracking/flaking during colder weather when it usually becomes dehydrated.
But most importantly drink lots of water!!!!

My skin is quite sensitive and I sometimes suffer with dry skin (during winter months) so I use this brand called Simple, idk if it's available wherever you live, but it always works for me. I have to be careful because some moisturisers can irritate my skin, but the Simple moisturiser always makes my skin feel really soft and smooth but doesn't irritate it. It might be good for you to try out.

when i had acne i was prescribed this cream that basically removed my skin and in the end i had to be prescribed a clinical moisturiser that worked really well, just a heads up if you find NOTHING that works in regular drugstores. i do find oil based moisturisers really good (coconut oil) but i'm no expert on skincare

I used coconut oil for acne and it helped rather than make me break out, but yeah, I've had the best experience with coconut oil for moisturization. It can be a bit expensive for a jar, but it lasts a looong time.

Wow, I see. I think this actually may be whats wrong. I had a very bad case of VZV meningitis, and for about 5 days before I went into hospital I couldn't eat or drink literally anything because it would just come back up again. Like I said, I was VERY dehydrated by the time I got into hospital and was on a fluid drip for about a week. I was also on heavy duty antivirals as well so that probably didn't help either.

Real talk: this Working Hands stuff that you can get in Home Depot (if you live in the US), on amazon, etc is the be-all end-all of moisturizing. We're talking Holy Grail right here:

My father has tried every budget lotion out there and I've been alongside him on this weird journey, mostly because I've had to research and buy them for him (lol). His skin is dry beyond belief and he works on cars and does miscellaneous maintenance stuff all the time; his palms and fingers end up chapped and cracking if he doesn't moisturize. He's gone through just as many tubs of various lotions as he has given up on some completely because they were just that terrible. This is the ONLY thing he's happy with and uses regularly, and it's improved the state of his hands considerably.

Also, as a general rule: don't wash dishes bare-handed. You'll look ridiculous, but use rubber gloves. They're cheap but I'm sure they make some cute ones somewhere out there, idk. Dish soap is drying as all hell and can screw up all your hard work trying to moisturize :P
