The GameFAQs Best Game Ever competition now has Animal Crossing New Leaf vs Super Mario World today as one of the contestants. If you voted, which would you vote for?

I love NL. I seriously do. But I consider Super Mario World one of my favorite games of all time. I had to vote for Super Mario World. It was a hard choice though.

I am a huge Mario fan with merchandise of everything but Super Mario World... Ooh i don't like that game. I like every other Mario game better than Super Mario World. Haters are gonna hate but it is just my opinion.

From my personal "Best Game Ever"-list:

7: Animal Crossing: New Leaf
...
12: Super Mario World

Two of my favorites but AC:NL is better.

Even though I'm a huge Mario fan, I never played Super Mario World, so...

You should try it sometime! I think it's the best 2D Mario game.

What do you dislike about it, out of curiosity? Not gonna hate against you. Everybody has their own opinion, so it's a fair thing to say if you don't like it.

IMO, there's really bad Mario games. Like Mario is Missing and Mario's Time Machine. If you want to talk about actual real Mario games, not spinoffs, then the one I dislike the most is the Japanese Super Mario Bros 2 (aka The Lost Levels). My problem with that game is it's hard enough that it's not fun anymore.

Fair enough. If I were judging based on number of hours played, of course NL is going to win. Super Mario World can be completed much faster than NL. But I think Super Mario World has more sheer fun to it. Some aspects of NL feel like work.

It's kind of difficult to compare since they're such different games but Super Mario World is a game that I've been returning to for over 20 years and it still holds up as well now as it did then. I wonder if we'll be able to say the same about NL in 20 years time.

Ones a retro platformer and the other is an easy-going life simulation game. You can't really compare those two lol?

But yeah ACNL. Super Mario World is pretty bland as far as atmosphere goes and has such little variety in power ups. I mean Super Mario Bros. 3 and the New Super Mario Bros. games are far better. Not to mention the Mario RPG's like the Mario and Luigi games or Paper Mario.

Kind of the way I think of it.

I still regularly pick up SMW and have done since I were about 4/5 years old. I don't think I'll be able to say the same thing about NL in 20 years. To be honest, I don't think I'll be able to say the same about NL the moment a sequel is released.

Animal Crossing is one of those games to me where the newest is the only one worth playing, where as most platformers are a bit more 'timeless' than that.

I'm a huge Mario fan but ACNL for me. Truthfully, I'm not that fond of the first few Super Mario games.

I haven't played any of the Mario RPGs other than the original. Same with New Super Mario Bros. I have the original DS game, but none of the rest. The original DS New Super Mario Bros actually felt bland to me, but strangely it was from a music perspective. I think that has the most forgettable soundtrack of the Mario games I've played.

I mostly like Super Mario World from a level design perspective. It has a wide variety of level types and they're a lot of fun, I think. One of the huge advantages to SMW at the time too was it was the first Mario game that let you save your progress. The original NES versions of Super Mario Bros 1-3 don't let you save. The lack of saving is part of the reason why people abused warp pipes and whistles back in the day - so they could beat the game faster because of time restrictions and being unable to save.

I do see what you mean about the power ups. But I think the cape is more fun than the raccoon tail (since you can keep flying) and of course Yoshi is pretty fun.

I agree with this entirely. Animal Crossing eclipses itself every time a new one gets released. There's less reason to go back to the old ones.

I love ACNL, but I love, love SMW because I grew up playing the old Mario games and playing with Yoshi in the game was nice.

I did enjoy the 2D Super Mario World games, but not that much compared to the Animal Crossing games. They were pretty good for their time and reasonably challenging (from what I can remember), but I don't feel the motivation to want to go back to them again after having completed them several times like I do Animal Crossing. Probably doesn't help my opinion of the Mario franchise after having played Super Mario World 3D, just glad I got it free in one of Nintendo's promotional events...
