I've decided to stop giving my villagers fish and bugs. I'm trying to make their houses cute. :)

Anyway, is it better to refuse a request (like if they ask me to get them a butterfly), or say I will do it, then don't. They get disappointed if I refuse them, but is it better than lying to them? I don't know if this has any effect on friendships.

From what I understand, it's better to say 'no' if you really can't do something, rather than say 'yes' and not do it. At least you're being honest with 'no, i won't do that'.

If you say yes and don't do it- I think that agitates them a little more.

Thanks for starting this thread! I always thought it was better to say yes and then "forget" to do it for them than flat-out say no.

I always thought that too, but then I heard the opposite. I'm still not sure - but I think it's probably true. A lot of the time when you say no, they don't really seem too bothered. I just talk to them a few times more to make sure they're still happy with me.

If you say yes, and then fail, they (sometimes) bring it up later. Which suggests to me they dislike it more when they get their hopes up.

This is what you do in real life.
However in Animal Crossing, I always say yes and then "forget". One time I said "no" straight out and they got depressed, so I never did that again. Saying "yes" first at least shows you're open to helping them out, if you want to look at this from a moral standpoint.

Also at the time of being promised a coelacanth or a horned Hercules, how is a villager to know with 100% certainty that you'll catch one? They've got no right to feel let down if you fail.

I'm always getting them the fish and the bugs they want. They're always so sad if I say no and personally I don't mind that their houses are full of bugs and fish :D

I've only had them bring it up when I failed twice, or if I tried to give them another item (like "take this" and then picking out something else in my inventory that wasn't exactly what they'd wanted), so I always assumed they forgot or thought you just couldn't find it. I've said yes to requests and ended up feeling bad because I couldn't find whatever they were looking for. Maybe it's got something to do with personality type? I'll just start saying no and make up for it by talking to them a few times, thanks!

This was my reasoning too. They often seem upset if you say no, so I've always assumed that saying yes and then not going through with it (on purpose or just because you couldn't find that item) would make them feel happy that you're at least trying to help. They just tend to forget it by the next day.

I've also noticed that with non-native fruit sometimes you still get the option to give it to them the next day, but when you try they'll tell you they just don't feel like eating it now or that they already got it on their own, but they thank you for your effort so I've just assumed that was better for friendship levels.

I mean, it would be a bit unfair if you ended up lowering your friendship with a villager just because that villager asked for something that was hard to find and very specific, and you couldn't get it even if you tried really hard to. One of my villagers asked me for something once, and I like him a lot so I tried to find what he'd asked for, but I couldn't find it in my town or the island (I even took that island trip on purpose to see if I could find it there!).

As long as it's not a delivery request, I usually say yes and then just not do it if I don't want to do it. Like, there's no way I'm going to search for an orange if I don't have one in my town! DX

I'm not sure which is worse, really. But from what I've seen, you can boost that friendship up again and I don't notice them hating you or anything.

I've gotten really insane about their houses too. Once you spend months trying to get an ugly fish/bug out of their house, you learn to just say no. I also don't deliver packages, cuz it ends up being some ugly shirt they want to wear for the next few years, or some ugly furniture. I say no, straight out. I'm at max friendship with my villagers though, they still love me. :p I think once you're already bff's you don't really lose friendship. I just give them perfect fruit when they ask for fruit and they throw me their pics lol. Guess they like me mean.

I've pretty much stopped accepting bug/fish requests from my villagers. Aurora's house is a total mess because of it, lol. None seem to react badly about it.

The most I'll do is fruit requests and maybe delivery requests as long as the villager gives me the opportunity to guess what's inside the present and then they give it to me if I'm right.

I don't give my villagers fish, bugs, or weird ugly stuff they ask for, I have been tryin for months to get pietro to get rid of that stupid fish..
