About fishing...

So I've been playing New Leaf since 2015, and whenever I go fishing, I know that they'll take the bait guaranteed after the missed third hit, because they always do that.

But now, recently (1 time a few days ago and 1 time just now), 2 of my fish has skipped the fourth one as well, resulting in me not even getting them since I pull them up by reflex on the fourth hit.

Have they always been able to hit 5 times? (idk what word I should use, english isn't my native)
Like have I been very unlucky to not getting to know of that, or was it added recently or something?

Huh, that's weird then. After fishing for 3 years, this is the first time they've got to five.

It is as chet_manley says, fishing has always been up to 5 bites before they take the bait. Like this since acnl released in 2013, its not a new addition.
Admittedly they usually take the bait before, but it can go to 5 , and yes I often press A on the 4th.
I hate fishing I find it unrelaxing, I do it, especially if sharks/large shadow but know I won't always catch. Bug farming is a lot lot easier for me.
