Since I’ve been focused on landscaping my town, I have pretty much all of my flowers on the beach so they can’t grow. The only ones I have on the grass areas are a few pansy hybrids that I’m trying to grow, and one black rose. I don’t have any other roses in this area besides this one black rose. Today I looked though, and there’s another one growing beside it. Is this normal? Cause I‘ve always thought you had to have at least two flowers for another one to grow, and I don’t. I’m the only one who plays my switch, and I don‘t play online so. So unless villagers can plant flowers in this game, I have no idea where this flower came from unless this is a new mechanic in this game that I don’t know about. Either that or my game somehow glitched.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

Yes. Its called cloning.

Very useful if you want to reproduce one of the same flower and not chance a hybrid.

Just plant the flower you want a copy of on its own, water, and repeat.

About half of my hybrids I obtained from people on these forums, then cloned them.

Makes blue roses a breeze.

Do you know if they can clone, even if there's a flower planted next to them? I've been trying to get purple pansies, so I have a blue pansy and a red pansy together. According to hybrid guides, the offspring should be 100% hybrid red, but I had another blue spawn instead.

The Austin John Plays Animal Crossing series on youtube is pretty entertaining as you watch his trials and failures - rumor mongering and truth discovering - and ironing out how the game works from a code standpoint eventually. His bee/flower area he set up for cloning is a beautiful example.

I think there becomes a chance of cloning or any number of possible hybrids when two different colors of the same flowers are next to eachother.

Hmm, if that's the case that can be confusing in some cases!

For one of the methods to breed blue roses, in one of the steps you have to breed an orange rose with a bred white rose to get a bred orange rose. If the orange rose cloned instead of producing offspring with the adjacent white rose, I suppose you'd have no way of knowing.

I believe they do not clone if they're right next to a flower they can breed with. Breeding is priority, cloning is the back up plan if there's no flower of it's own species next to it. Was the red that bred with the blue a red from a seed bag? Or were there any other pair of pansies nearby that could've produce it?

Ah, that might explain it then. I wasn't keeping track of my flowers' backgrounds at all before I found hybrid guides, but I don't have it in me to get rid of all my base colors because I've just let them reproduce as they please and I'd have to wait for Leif to sell them to me to consider doing that. It's possible whatever that red pansy came from made it so it can produce blue offspring? Not complaining, honestly

Yeah, about breeding resulting in unexpected colors, that's because the colors are determined by genes and not color. So two flowers can look the exact same but not have the same genes. Which is why you shouldn't use breeding guides that only use colors, because you can get weird results if you don't use flowers you know the genes of (e.g. seeds. seeds of one color always have the same genes)

I hate the cloning thing, seperated some flowers in goldie's yard, (i time traveled to 2024 while stopping at every month)

what do i see?
GOLDIE IS IN FREAKING FLOWER HELL???

why god why

I have found that cloning takes a lot longer than breeding, but it does take up a lot less space on your island. My original flower farm was huge (two of every hybrid planted next to each other), and I got about 6-8 new flower buds a day just from watering myself. Now I have most of the hybrids I need, I swapped to the cloning technique which only yields about 2-3 flowers a day.

Hey your character is Moon too?! I use it because it have 2 first names, Jo**** Moon!
Yeah! ive actually noticed Moon is a somewhat common name for mayors/resident reps, but its what people call me online and so it was definitely gonna be moon for me
