Whenever having someone over on my old DS, I always have the comfort of knowing I can flip the wi-fi switch if they start messing up my town, even though I know it's highly unlikely to even happen, but still. With the new 3DS, I don't see any wi-fi switch, instead the ability to turn off wi-fi connection is through the main menu probably to avoid people accidentally flicking it off in the middle of doing something. So I've just turned off my game instead in the past but I'm afraid of corruption when doing that. Unfortunately for me, I love digital downloads so I can't move my main town to my old DS while playing online if I wanted that ability to kick someone out.

My question is, what do you guys do? Do you just turn off your game or just hope for the best when people visit? My reasoning for this question is because I know you can boot people out of your town, but doesn't it save when you do it that way?

It really sucks, and ending the multiplayer session saves the game. I've fortunately never had any people come to my town and mess stuff up and/or steal, but if that did happen then I'd just force my game off via the power button. Idek if that would work properly since I've never tried it.

I agree, it does, and thank you for letting me know. Same here and I hope we never run into anyone who does those things. :S I've once had someone come into my town randomly and want my hybrids and I was so worried that they'd steal them so I followed them the whole time, which is actually what made me wonder this in the first place. Turning the power off has worked for me so far (I've only tried it once when I was visiting from my other town) but I'm worried about getting my game corrupted because I've worked so hard on it :/

I don't think your game can get corrupted because it hasn't been saved which is basically what dcing/flipping the switch is. You're turning things off instead of saving. The worst it can do is get Resetti on your back :p. Now, dcing or pressing the power button whilst saving...that could cause damage i mean i imagine it would. I think your fine though.

My friend thought she could trust one of her friends, she left her golden watering can on the floor. The friend asked to save so she did i think my friend went to the place she left the watering can found it gone tied the two together and chased her all tde way to the train station. Nothing she can do to get it back already save in hr pockets from that "innocent" save she asked for.

I have also had people steal half if not all my hybrids before. I trusted this girl i said anything you want just ask, went brb came back she was gone an she left me with barely half of anything. I was p!ssed i defriended her. So i can understand why people want that safety net. I would recommend just the 3ds. While in session you can't go to the home button anyway i'm not sure if its the same for this new ds but still, doesn't sound good.

I have a New 3DS but I don't really play online or do any trading. I might get into it later though, in which case this information will be handy to know. So thanks for posting this thread :)

I guess that makes sense! I don't mind Resetti, besides I might just tell him it was an accident... >.>
That's so awful! I'll probably never save if someone randomly asks because I don't want my things stolen. I also feel safer trading with people through this website because I know I can leave a bad wi-fi/trading rating so people will know and most people will not steal from you because they don't want those bad ratings.
I don't understand why people would do that kind of stuff, like stealing your friend's gold watering can or more than half your hybrids, I would feel really bad if I did that to someone >.< I wish I could use the 3DS but I have a digital copy so I can't switch back to my old device. I get a digital copy in practically everything which I guess could have some downsides. Lucky for me I do still have a copy of ACNL on my old DS, it's just not my best town where I have a lot of nice things. I actually got into the habit of using an alternate character to pick up all my good flowers and keep them in storage so people can't take them. But that girl came so unexpectedly to my town that I didn't have time to hide them. I've also had people shake my trees and try to take my money but get mad at me when I take it first. It's my town after all... they've also taken my fruit without asking, which isn't as big of a deal as taking hybrids, but I still would like to keep my fruit! I mean, all anyone has to do is ask and I might say yes, but if you try to steal, not only will I never give you anything, but you're likely to never be invited over again and defriended. (Pro tip: don't invite people over through kik groups). I know you can't go to the menu while connecting, that's why I asked this question and I get why Nintendo did that, but I really don't prefer it. If they were preventing accidental shut-downs, they shouldn't have moved the power switch where they did because man, I can tell you the way I hold my DS, I've accidentally turned the power off more times than I can count and it's really annoying.

But yeah, I'm really sorry you've had such bad experiences with people. I guess you can't even trust people you would consider your friends because they might steal your stuff while you're away..

If you play with people from Bell Tree, mostly everyone is kind and courteous! It's very rare, from what I've seen anyway, for someone to rip other people off or steal from them. I think most users have a 100% wi-fi rating. Just make sure to check their wi-fi ratings anyway beforehand to see what you're getting into. Also, make sure you follow people or have them follow you! You never know what they might do, as DarkCharliXo has proven. And no problem, I hope the previous posts have helped you out a little bit :)

I don't really play online, so this hasn't been an issue for me, but I have the habit of creating backup files of my saves in case something unexpected happens, or if someone decided to come into my town and screw me over.

But as others have said, turning off the DS would be the next safest option without access to the wifi switch.

I always play Animal Crossing in my chair, which is next to the internet router. If things go wrong, I just turn off the router, resetting the internet and turning it off temporarily. Unfortunately, that means I disconnect who ever else is on the internet in my house too... If my brother's doing a ranked Splatoon battle or something like that, I don't want to interrupt that, so I just turn off my 3Ds instead.

From my experience using the new 3DS, you can just turn system off. It works almost exactly as flipping the switch for the old 3DS except takes more steps getting back into the game. I've had to do it 3 times already, and I've encountered no issues because the game saves when you open the gates, so it's not like you accidentally lose a ton of work or time with it. Just takes a few minutes to get back into the game instead of the game reloading due to the wifi switch. None of my games have corrupted because of this either. I honestly say as long as you don't try to do it during a save, the risks of it are about the same as just flipping a wifi switch. But again, this is my personal opinion on it from my experiences.

I was actually about to say that's a good idea but unfortunately there are 5 people in my family who use the internet. My dad uses the internet for his work and for school (he's taking an online course) so cutting him off from it, even for a short while would not be good. Especially if he's taking a timed test. Good idea though for people who can turn it off! :O

Oh, I didn't remember that it saves when you open the gates, whoops. Thanks for reminding me, haha! Taking a few minutes to get back into the game isn't that big of a deal to me. Especially considering I plot reset for Twiggy like 30 times this morning -_- Again, thanks so much for your post, I actually feel a bit better about it now!

I have a digital copy and had to hit the power button when someone wouldn't let me leave the island.
Everything still works okay. For trades here I use my other town and it's usually a quick trade.

Trading over to another town before giving someone stuff is actually a good idea too. I might do that for future small loads, thank you!
I'm just curious - how does someone not let you leave the island? Do they just block the way or something?

At Club Tortimer a player can start a tour and than not go on it. You can't leave the island until they go on the tour or cancel it.
Some players like to do it to try and get money or to troll you. I just block them before I hit the button or the wifi switch.

They can also stop you from leaving if they have their inventory opened. One night I watched someone foot tap and I couldn't leave.
Same thing happened when I visited another players town. I belong to a group that opens their gates and it's okay to visit. The person didn't answer me so I thought they were busy. Some players in our group leave their gates opened all night. Just dropping by to help with their host badge. When I went to the train station the train wasn't working. Try abunch of times and when I went outside the players foot was tapping. Typed a message but it didn't work so I finally had to hit the wifi switch. Not sure what happened. Maybe someone else was playing with the 3DS when she wasn't watching.

Ohh, I understand now! Honestly, I would just leave my DS and go do something else while I waited for them to stop being so childish. They'd be wasting their own time.

Oh yeah. Sometimes I prevent people from coming into my town by opening my pockets while I'm away from my DS because I don't want them running away without me and doing stuff.
I feel like that last situation is kind of weird, maybe it was an accident? One time I had my pockets open and I wasn't paying attention when someone was trying to leave my town so they couldn't leave. I felt so bad. I had to close my pockets and apologise a million times. ;-;

I have another question: if someone flips their switch, does that mean that you get disconnected from the island too? Or is it just them?

Everyone gets kicked off the island when the Wifi switch gets flipped.
I've met players later in the evening that were on the island when it happened. Asked if I got kicked off too.

I think players grandchildren were playing with it while I was visiting.

Hmmm, that is an awfully weird thing NOT to include with the new ds. Makes me think twice about picking it up. I don't know. I love my pink 3DS just the way she is :)

Yeah these are people i met on the island but i 100% agree with what you're saying, Star. It is your town, your stuff, NO ONE should touch it without asking. It's common courtesy of being a guest. If they're children then they will have a tough time knowing this depending on their age but its no excuse really specially if its known by saying "Anything you want just ask" how else can you make it clear? Fruit..well..at least it grows back but it's still yours and they should ask. Money trees? I'd be p!ssed at that too...it costs a lot to get it to work. IFF it works. You have the right to keep your town safe.

I really believe that saving while your online or in a trade will not corrupt your data. Your data will only corrupt if you turn the power off while saving/connecting to Internet. Congratulations on the new 3DS by the way :)
