When you're fishing and your fish is circling rapidly around the bobber, do you have to mash A to get it?
I've been doing it out of habit since I first got my first copy, and only now sort of realized I may not need to do that.

Then again I have heard of the original animal crossing where you had to mash a button to wash Gracie's car...

You listen for the "plop" sound and press A once. Too early early or too late and it will escape.
I don't even look at the screen when I fish, I just hold the DS up to my ear and wait for the bite.

I too do this. You only have to press the button once and wait. I feel like we needed to smash it repeatedly in wild world though or on the game cube ( and that’s why maybe I still do that). I sort of do it unintentionally.

No, you don't. Since I only played New Leaf, my instincts tell me to only press the button once. Imagine if that was still mandatory and having to mash harder if it's a bigger fish!

It was hand-bustingly difficult. x3 I don't know if I ever got that car to sparkle enough for her standards. At least in Wild World, you could dump 5,000 bells into her hand to get one of her shirts if you messed up.

It has never been required to mash A in any game. Gamecube's fishing is slightly different in that the fish are a lot faster, but you do not have to press anything while your character is reeling them in. Wild World and City Folk's fishing are basically identical to New Leaf's and none of those games require mashing A.

Also as Dizzy Bone said, not looking at the screen is a great way to increase success. That way tends to decrease nervousness, meaning you are less likely to press A prematurely. Humans also respond to auditory cues much faster than visual cues.

If you have trouble with Gracie's car, perhaps try "jitter clicking" on it. It's basically where you tense your arm muscles to make your finger "vibrate". This can make you click at a ridiculous amount of times per second. Be warned that you don't want to use this method too frequently as it may have negative health effects. However, doing it for only a few seconds like for Gracie's car is probably completely fine.

When my brother and I first starting playing AC:GCN years ago, we would mash the A button when reeling in a fish (I actually thought we were the only ones that did it lol). But you only need to press it once when they bite down and you'll get it, no matter what game you play.

Ahaha, thanks guys!
Washing Gracie's car sounds extra fun.
My reflexes are just fine, I was just wondering if the button-mashing I was doing was necessary or not. =D

Really? I’ve been playing wrong this whole time. I must of gotten the habit from some other game then. Maybe harvest moon, sims or pokemon. For sure I’ve been fishing pretty much the same in all of these games :D

at first i did but when i found out the fishing in the game is a bit like Pokemon's fishing mechanic i stopped almost immediately.
