5 of my villagers have matching tops?

If u put the top in mable and sable's shop on display then they can chose to wear the outfit.

I read somewhere that villagers will mimic certain personality types regarding clothes. I once gave Marcie a top and within a week, everyone was wearing it. I actually saw marcie give the top to another villager in the background

i'm having the same issue - 4 of my villagers are wearing this green and white striped tank top. i'm guessing that if you haven't gifted them a shirt or something, they will eventually change into a default shirt. so, if it bothers you, i guess you could probably give you a replacement shirt or something.

Yep. They start their own trends. Al gave me a dapper tee. Al and Goldie were both wearing these at the time.

For my villagers, the latest trend is the pink polka-dot shirt, as well as the 'Shirt from Anyone' display at Mable's. At the same time that this trend started, three or four villagers also started saying 'KerPOW', Tank's catchphrase. I really hop that this ends soon; Hippeux in pink saying KerPOW is just too weird. I've been sending him shirts by mail every day, hoping he will get the message that it's not fashionable.

I started up New Shirt Wednesdays for this very reason. I collect shirts throughout the week and mail them out on Wednesday so at 5pm most of them change to something different. xD

sometimes villagers trend from each other if they hang out a lot, much like how they copy each others' phrases. for example, kid cat calls me 'baby,' and now monty's at it too. i believe it's the same for clothing.

p.s, you can try sending villagers shirts in the mail. sometimes they wear them. or get them for their birthdays if they're coming up and they'll put it on as soon as you give it to them. i got Kid Cat a really cute sports shirt for his birthday, and he put it on straight away and hasn't took it off since.

Monique has started saying Rolf's catchphrase, 'Grrrolf'. He's a cranky tiger - his catchphrase sounds all wrong coming from a snooty cat!

I seem to find as soon as I give them a new shirt, they just put it in their house and instead decide to put on that plain white button-down look shirt that is Ables at the start of the game.
