First would be JRPGs. I love the amount of focus developers can put into the strategy and narrative of these games. I generally prefer turned based JRPGs since they’re easier to relax with. Personal favorites include Persona, Shin Megami Tensei, Earthbound and Trails in the Sky.
Next are visual novels. They are some of the best examples of what interactive storytelling can do. I’m particularly fond of Ace Attorney and Zero Escape.
The last major genre I really like are rhythm games. Improving my scores while jamming out to some nice music never ceases to be enjoyable. My favorite rhythm games are DJ Max Respect, Cytus 2 and Deemo.
I really like playing a variety, but I seem to pour most of my time into first person shooters so I'd probably have to go with that. Probably a close second would be action/adventure story driven games.
Action - adventure games, although this really depends on the game. Love me a good Zelda or something.
Visual novels / visual novel-esque games. I'm also a big fan of "walking simulators". Playing through a story / experience yourself vs watching a movie or something is so different and so much more immersive, I don't get why people diss them. They can make for some very creative games.
Other more narrative / experience heavy games. I like weird, indie ones that dare to creative stuff with the medium a lot.
If I had more time RPGs would probably be up here too. And metroidvanias, but honestly I've only played Hollow Knight so far.
I love RPGs/JRPGs the most, but simulation games are a close second! Do farming games count as a simulation game? Like Stardew Valley and Story of Seaons? Because those are my jam too lol!
I unironically love otome games or games with an emphasis on story/characters. I'm also a big fan of games that just let me do whatever I want with few limitations lol.
