I was playing animal crossing this afternoon. After I was done playing I saved and quit and closed the lid to put the device on sleep as I normally would. I just turned on the game and found it weird that Isabelle was saying she hadn’t seen me in a while. My town was in winter and I don’t TT so it freaked me out. I immediately quit to check my system time and it was 01/01/2011?!?! Some people online said that it could be that the battery died so the system reset but my battery still had 3 bars!!! Does anyone know what this means? I haven’t turned the game back on but does this mean I’ve lost my villagers?!?!

If your 3DS didn’t die, then maybe the battery itself got knocked loose in the system? If you’ve got the tools, maybe open it up and take a peek to make sure everything is secured (and maybe to make sure the battery itself isn’t bloating or anything).

I second the post above mine. I've had it happen to me once when I was cleaning my 3DS and did not fully screw shut my back cover. The battery got loose and my system time got reset. Your device will only reset the time if it's been disconnected to a power source that includes running out of battery.

Back when it happen to me, I reset the time back to normal and none of my villagers left even though Isabelle said I was away for a bit. You could set your system time back to normal again and load the game, maybe it would resume from your last save. I'm not too sure with this though, sorry  Hope nothing much changes in your town from this mishap.

This literally happened to me yesterday and today. What I do is that try not to load the game, go into the Settings clock and change it to whatever date you left it on, I’m assuming today’s date. I have a villager I’m boxes that I‘m holding for someone else, and when my 3DS would change the date to 1/1/2011, I would notice it snowing in-game, of course it would seem like she’s gone. Just don’t load yet, and change the 3DS clock to the original date and nothing will change. I did it and she’s still there on the same day as I left it. 😄
If you check around, maybe you didn’t lose any villagers? ⭐

This happens so often to me but it will usally only be a few days, mine does it because it was one of the first ones that battery would shift a bit over time and if I turn to bump against something itll turn off,you might want to check the battery?

That seems likely. Unfortunately I don't have the tools to unscrew the back cover but I did notice one of the screws being a bit loose. I tried tightening it with a screwdriver for fixing glasses. Fingers crossed it's not the battery...!!!

Later when I had recovered from the shock I checked in and it seemed like all my villagers were still there. There were more flowers and weeds but that's about it. Phew. Actually when I played this morning it happened again and that was before I realised one of the screws was a bit loose. Crisis averted!

Thanks for sharing and letting me know it happens to other people too! I did exactly what you did this morning and it was fine :) so I'm still one happy mayor :)

It sounds like battery has to be the issue since most comments mention that :(
