So today I come home after school, get a snack as planned, and sit down to my usual one-hour downtime session of Animal Crossing. But, something was clearly amiss, for after I powered on my favourite handheld console, nothing happened.

The screen was black, but the power and wireless lights were on. I had a glimmer of hope when FINALLY it took me to the home screen, but then the home screen title just froze and nothing happened either. I contacted Nintendo and gave them my serial number, and they said that if I didn't sign up for the extended warranty I would have to pay $85 for the repair and an extra $10 for the shipping, as it would be the only way to get it fixed. That's $95(CAD)! Ugh, firstworldgamerproblems.

Has this happened to anyone before? Or does anybody have any solutions? I don't know how long I can go without my crossing-fix...

Its happened to me. The 3ds may be broken, like the wires. Sometimes it fixes, sometimes it doesnt. My little brothers never did.

I'm so upset about this... it was working just fine last night until I opened it after school and it was just like 'NOPE IMA DIE FOREVER NOW'. And not only is the repair (uber) expensive, but it'll probably take weeks to get done and shipped back to me.

That's like half of the price of a new one or something? Damn.

Yeah, I think the standard 3DS is around $200-220 and the XL is $250. I'm also concerned my villagers will move out in the time it takes to get fixed IF I can get it fixed that is, because I have a ton on hold for people and it would suck if they left.

Oh yeah.. that's actually a huge problem. I guess borrowing a 3DS from somebody could be an option, but you might have a downloadable copy / not know anybody with one. Damn I'm gonna be careful with my 3DS now.. Don't wanna lose my babies on my digital copy.

I have two copies of animal crossing but my other town is my cycling and catalog town and this is my main player's town. Unfortunately, my main town is a digital copy so I can't pop it out and play it on my XL, and to transfer my SD card data to my XL I need to be able to connect it to my small one which is, um, DEAD. I didn't drop it, shake it, rattle it or starve it of battery. It just confuses me. Oh well.

Haha my main is digital aswell, while my cycling town is a cartridge.. either way good luck uwu

Aww ;_; I hope it isn't dead (??). This actually happened to me the other day on my 3DS XL, it's like 4 months old. It froze when I turned it on and I started to freak out. It blacked out too, but I turned it on and off (kept doing it lol ;_;), and when it came back on, froze on home screen again. So I switched my wi-fi off and magically it starts to work normally again.

I hope your villagers stay! I didn't see my second cartridge for well over a month and luckily, everyone stayed put. Good luck though!!

Ah, maybe I should give that a shot too. I'm trying to see if I can find a secondary retailer who may be able to fix it, but worst comes to worst I'll just have to send it off and pay. Thanks! :)

Aw, that really sucks. D:
And that price is ridiculous as well. My suggestion, just in case you don't want to wait so many weeks to get it repaired, would be to look into getting one on ebay. I know some people want the "brand spanking new" thing but you can usually find a couple really good deals there! I've gotten game systems from ebay and even though they weren't brand new, they looked almost new and have lasted years.
Sorry that happened to you, I'd be pretty upset if that happened to me too. I got my 3DS on release day so the price was realllllly high so it would be annoying to lose all that money.

Thanks for the suggestions and sympathy :) Unfortunately, I need this 3DS if I'm to keep my animal crossing save file. This copy is digital and is on that 3DS' SD card. In order to do a data transfer, I need this one to work so I can set up the wireless connection. Otherwise I would have just transferred the data over to my other 3DS XL. :(

Luckily, I managed to get a referral for a retailer in my area who does system and console repairs, so I may have a quick and (much) cheaper shot at getting it fixed now :)

This happened to me back in 2011. I just closed my 3DS for a few minutes, and when I opened it, it was completely frozen. I turned it off and back on, and it looked fine at first glance. But then it would freeze again whenever you tried to start up any game or app. I had warranty, but it was completely broken, so there went $80 of downloaded games. :(
