Firstly no Mayans had no telescopes but for there time they did map how the stars change pretty well. That being said the supposed "end of the world" they predicted really wasn't what they meant by it. From my understanding the end of their calendar has something to do with the alignment of the sun and the milky way. That being said the end of their calendar has about as much weight as the end of our calendar. You know, the one we go through every year.
Second Indian means from India... More proper, and or politically correct to say Native Americans, or as more properly referred to as their actual specific culture, in this case Mayan. Using Indian for the people native on the American continents was a misnomer since Columbus assumed that was where he had landed... so unfortunate.
Thirdly, I really don't think they predicted the end of the world at all, least of all using specifics such as by meteorite or solar flare.
